Hey neighbour, happy Friday!!

What a Friday we have lined up for you; a heritage building fighting for its life, a healthcare scandal heading to court, a verdict that could change the internet as we know it, and an Oilers overtime thriller in Vegas that had us all holding our breath until the very last second. And speaking of stories worth telling, our Local Love Spotlight space is open and we are actively looking for our next local business hero. If you own a business in Edmonton or the surrounding areas and you have a story worth sharing, we would love to shine a light on it. Click the link at the bottom of Local Love Spotlihgt, and let us know you are interested. Now let's get into it!

Grab your coffee, or tea or a drink and let's get into it. 💛

🏛️ Is Edmonton's Beloved Old Museum Finally Getting a Second Life?

The building has been sitting empty since 2015, but it may not be sitting empty for much longer.

  • Edmonton architectural firm Reimagine Architects has confirmed it is in active talks with the provincial government to potentially transform the former Royal Alberta Museum in Glenora into a community hub with pickleball courts, arts spaces, a market and a café

  • The century mark building costs taxpayers more than $700,000 a year just to keep the lights on, and the province had $30 million budgeted for demolition, but negotiations with Reimagine are ongoing and the wrecking ball is not rolling yet

  • "I honestly think this building has the potential to be something better than it ever was," said principal Vedran Škopac

If you have memories of that building, now is the time to make your voice heard. Would you love to see the old RAM reimagined rather than demolished?

📚 Who Tells Our Story When the Money Runs Out?

Edmonton's local historians are sounding the alarm, and they need people to listen.

  • The heads of two local historical societies say provincial budget cuts are putting irreplaceable community history at risk, warning that once the knowledge is gone, it does not come back

  • "Learning about the place you live gives you so much context and so much more appreciation for why things are the way they are in your city," said Kelsey Kendrick, president of the Edmonton and District Historical Society

  • Meanwhile, city council just opened public consultations on the 2027 to 2030 four-year budget, running until May 1, the city is tackling a $42.2 million structural deficit and a $2.8 billion infrastructure gap, and your input is wanted

What piece of Edmonton history do you think deserves to be protected most? Drop it in the comments.

🏒 Bouchard Breaks Hearts in Vegas as the Oilers Steal Two Crucial Points

In overtime. In Las Vegas. In a game that felt like the playoffs — because for these two teams, it basically already is.

  • Evan Bouchard scored the winner at 3:10 of overtime to give the Oilers a 4 to 3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights last night, with McDavid logging a goal and two assists and Matthew Savoie and Zach Hyman also finding the back of the net

  • The win moves Edmonton to 36 wins on the season and solidifies their grip on second place in the Pacific Division, Vegas has now lost five of their past six and is in real danger of sliding out of a playoff position entirely

  • Next up: the Oilers are home Saturday afternoon to face the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Place, puck drop at 1:30 PM

The Oilers keep finding ways to win without Draisaitl in the lineup. Does this team have what it takes to go deep in the playoffs?

💊 Alberta Paid $49 Million for Medication It Never Received. Now It Wants Its Money Back.

One of the most expensive procurement blunders in Alberta's history is heading to court.

  • Alberta Health Services is pursuing legal action to recover $49 million paid to Edmonton-based importer MHCare and Turkish pharmaceutical firm Atabay for children's pain medication that was never delivered, a deal originally signed in 2022 during a national drug shortage

  • Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged there was "sloppiness" in how the contract was written, while Health Minister Matt Jones said plainly: "We have paid $49 million and not received the products as ordered. It is my expectation that we recover the $49 million"

  • The original deal and its messy aftermath are now under investigation by both the RCMP and the province's auditor general, and a former AHS CEO is separately suing for wrongful dismissal, alleging she was fired for digging too deep into the contracts

This is public money. Every Albertan has a stake in what happens next.

🏳️‍🌈 A Third Alberta Town Just Banned Pride Crosswalks and Decorative Flags

The vote was close. The reaction was not.

  • Didsbury, a town of about 5,200 people north of Calgary, has passed a "public spaces neutrality bylaw" that bans all decorative flags and non-standard crosswalk markings from public land, making it the third Alberta municipality to do so, following Westlock and Barrhead in 2024

  • The decision was four votes to three, and opponents say it sends a message to marginalized residents that their visibility in their own community does not matter

  • "The increasing number of cities and towns limiting representation of their residents in municipal spaces is cause for great concern," said Calgary Pride

Ironically, Didsbury does not currently have any Pride crosswalks or special flags. This bylaw bans something that does not yet exist there. What do you think that says?

🛢️ Canada Is Making Its Pitch to the World, and Alberta Is Centre Stage

With the Middle East in chaos and global energy markets rattled, Canada just showed up to the world's biggest energy conference with a very clear message.

  • Canada's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources wrapped a high-profile visit to CERAWeek 2026 in Houston, positioning Canada as a stable and reliable global energy partner at a moment when Middle East disruptions are sending prices and nerves skyward

  • Alberta delegations joined the federal pitch in Houston, reinforcing the Canada-Alberta partnership on energy as a counterweight to global volatility, a message that lands directly in the pockets of every Albertan who works in or benefits from the energy sector

  • Canada and Alberta also reached a new agreement on methane emissions reductions this week, part of a broader push to keep Canadian oil and gas competitive in international markets that are increasingly demanding cleaner production

Alberta's energy future and Canada's global reputation are increasingly the same conversation. Are we ready for the spotlight?

📱 A Jury Just Found Meta and YouTube Negligent for Harming a Child. Everything Just Changed.

This one is going to echo for a long time.

  • In a landmark legal verdict, a jury found Meta and YouTube negligent in a social media addiction case, ruling that the companies' design features were harmful to a young user and directly contributed to her mental health distress, the first verdict of its kind

  • The case argues that these platforms are not neutral pipes but deliberately engineered products designed to keep young people hooked, and that the companies knew it and kept going anyway

  • Industry analysts say the ruling opens the door to a wave of similar lawsuits across North America, which could force major changes to how social media platforms operate, and that includes every app your kids and grandkids are on right now

If you have children or grandchildren in your life, this verdict is worth knowing about. What do you think should happen next?

Spring in Edmonton, are you a glass half full or glass half empty kind of neighbour?

Option A: I love it 🌤️ The days are getting longer, the Oilers are in playoff mode, patio season is coming and honestly a little snow in March builds character.

Option B: Not a fan 🥶 Minus temperatures in late March, the roads are a mess, and I refuse to put my scraper away until June. Edmonton spring is just winter in a trench coat.
