Hey Edmonton! Happy Sunday!

Three days out from Thursday and yes, this city is still carrying a little of that hockey heartache around. I can see it in the comments and feel it in the air. But there is a lot happening beyond the playoff fog today, including a signal out of the Middle East that could mean something significant for Alberta oil prices and for every family with a summer trip booked. Let us get into it. 💛

💙 Edmonton, We Are Feeling This One Together

Three days after the elimination and this city is still doing what it does, carrying it together.

  • Local bars and restaurants near Rogers Place that had been counting on another deep playoff run are now recalibrating their spring revenue expectations; an early first-round exit against a team many had written off cuts deeper because nobody saw it coming

  • Fans across Edmonton and surrounding communities woke up Sunday still asking how a team with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl goes home in Round 1, the question is not angry so much as genuinely confused, which might be the hardest kind to sit with

  • The bigger question hanging over the summer: with goaltending decisions to make, roster questions to sort and an offseason starting far earlier than anyone planned, what does this core look like when October comes back around?

This city has been through playoff heartbreak before and we always come out the other side. But it is okay to feel it for a minute first. Drop a 💙🧡 in the comments if you are still processing, you are not alone.

🏭 The Refinery Just South of Edmonton Is Running Flat Out and Cashing In

While the rest of the world feels the pain of $2 diesel, the Strathcona refinery right in Edmonton's backyard is having a very different kind of spring.

  • Imperial Oil says it is maximizing the production of diesel and jet fuel across all three of its refineries, including the Strathcona facility just south of Edmonton, to take advantage of surging global fuel prices caused by the Iran war's shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz

  • Diesel prices across Canada now sit at an average of $2.21 per litre, about one third higher than before the war started, and jet fuel has roughly doubled; for a refinery already running, this is a genuine windfall

  • First quarter profit came in slightly below analyst estimates ($1.94 per diluted share versus the expected $2.39) largely due to unplanned downtime, but Imperial says operations have improved significantly and pricing conditions remain "very favourable"

It is a strange thing to live next door to a facility producing something the whole world urgently needs right now. Thoughts on this one? Drop them in the comments.

🌍 Canada Just Got a Seat at Europe's Most Exclusive Table

Prime Minister Mark Carney landed in Yerevan, Armenia on Saturday and this one is worth paying attention to.

  • Canada is attending the European Political Community summit for the first time, making it the first non-European nation ever invited to these gatherings; the summit has brought together roughly 50 countries twice a year since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022

  • Carney's office says the trip is about reinforcing support for Ukraine, deepening transatlantic defence ties and diversifying trade, the same diversification push that includes finding new markets for Alberta energy exports beyond the United States

  • The summit runs through Monday May 4; Carney is expected to meet with leaders from the UK, France, Germany and others; critics are flagging that this signals Ottawa is shifting away from a democracy-first foreign policy toward a more purely economic approach

Canada at a European table built on collective security and trade partnerships. For Alberta, the energy diversification piece matters. Does it change how you see where this country is headed? Tell us in the comments.

✈️ Air Canada Just Suspended Its 2026 Plan, Every Edmonton Family With Summer Travel Should Read This

If you have a trip booked out of YEG this summer, this weekend brought news you need to know.

  • Air Canada suspended its full-year 2026 financial guidance on Friday, saying jet fuel price volatility from the ongoing Iran war makes it impossible to forecast reliably beyond the next three months; the airline is now providing only second-quarter guidance

  • WestJet is in a similar position, and Air Transat has already cut 6 percent of its scheduled flights outright as it tries to manage soaring fuel costs in a market where jet fuel has roughly doubled since the war started

  • Air Canada is assuming jet fuel at $1.28 per litre for Q2 but says conditions could change materially depending on how the Strait of Hormuz situation develops, meaning fares, routes and seat availability could shift with very little warning

Have you already booked summer travel out of Edmonton? Are you reconsidering anything?

🕊️ Day 64: Trump Says He Is Reading Iran's Proposal. Oil Dropped $20 on Those Words.

Something shifted over the weekend and the oil markets moved on it immediately.

  • Iran submitted a formal 14-point peace proposal to the United States through Pakistani mediators Friday; the terms include opening the Strait of Hormuz, ending the naval blockade and leaving nuclear program talks for later, in exchange for frozen assets released, sanctions lifted and an end to all military operations

  • Trump told reporters Saturday he had been briefed on the "concept" of the deal and was waiting for exact wording, a meaningful step back from his flat rejection of an earlier Iranian proposal just 48 hours earlier; he also warned that military strikes could restart if Iran "misbehaves"

  • Brent crude dropped from a $116 high to around $102 a barrel on the signals, the sharpest single-week decline since the conflict began, though the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and no deal is confirmed; both sides appear to be negotiating through the media as much as through diplomats

Is this the beginning of the end of the Hormuz shutdown, or another false start? Alberta oil producers are watching every word. Drop your read in the comments.

🌤️ Edmonton Weather - Sunday May 3rd

Sunday is giving Edmonton a mixed bag today. Sun and cloud with a high of 18°C makes for a decent morning, but winds are picking up, gusting to 40 km/h through the afternoon and hitting northwest 60 near noon. If you are heading to Jane's Walk or any outdoor plans, get out early before it gets breezy. Overnight drops to a cool 5°C, so close the patio doors before bed.

HIT OR MISS 🎯

May is here, the sun is out, and farmers markets are starting to pop back up around the city. Food trucks are rolling out of winter storage. Edmonton and the surrounding communities have strong opinions about both and it is time to find out who the real local legends are.

Here is how it works. Think of your favourite farmers market or food truck spot in Edmonton or the surrounding area. Drop it in the comments with your verdict:

🟢 HIT - Worth the trip every single time. You would send your out-of-town friends there without hesitation.

🔴 MISS - Overrated, overpriced or just not what the hype promised.

Maybe it is the Old Strathcona Farmers Market on a Saturday morning. Maybe it is the St. Albert Farmers Market, which honestly has its own loyal following. Maybe it is a food truck you stumbled across parked outside a coffee shop last summer that you still think about in February. Whatever your go-to spot is, tell us. And if it is a miss, do not be shy about it either. Edmonton has opinions and this is a safe space for all of them.

Drop your hit or miss in the comments below and tag the spot so others can find it 👇
