Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Wednesday! ⛅

It was a hard night in north Edmonton, so we are leading with that story first. In this issue, a tornado watch moves through the region this evening, a homegrown dating app skips the swiping, and Spain books its ticket to the World Cup final.

One Dead, Two Still Missing After North Edmonton Apartment Explosion

What caused the explosion and fire at a north Edmonton apartment building?

A vehicle crash ruptured a gas line and triggered an explosion and fire at an apartment building near 82 Street and 132 Avenue Monday night.

  • One person is dead and two remain unaccounted for as crews continue searching the building.

  • Roughly 35 people across 16 units and the ground floor businesses were displaced.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected tonight.

Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for North Central Alberta

Is a tornado watch in effect for the Edmonton area tonight?

Environment Canada issued a tornado and severe thunderstorm watch Tuesday afternoon, with storms tracking east from the Rocky Mountain House and Edson areas toward Edmonton by evening.

  • Large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado are all possible as the system moves through.

  • Keep an eye on the sky if you are out and about tonight or early tomorrow.

Better to know before you head out the door.

Edmonton Made Dating App Skips the Swiping

Is there a new Edmonton made dating app that does not use swiping?

Local founder Annie Poirier built Oops Social, a homegrown dating app that trades swiping and texting for voice notes and playful icebreakers.

  • About 160 beta testers have been using it since it launched here June 29.

  • A fuller public launch is planned for later this summer.

Worth a look if dating apps have been wearing you out.

More Than $80,000 in Pokemon Cards Stolen From a Leduc Shop

How much was stolen from a Pokemon card shop in Leduc?

A Leduc hobby shop says thieves made off with more than $80,000 in Pokemon merchandise, part of a wider wave of similar heists hitting collectible shops this year.

  • The theft adds Leduc to a growing list of cities across North America hit by the same trend.

  • No arrests have been reported yet.

If you collect, might be worth double checking your own security.

The US Just Slapped New Tariffs on Canadian Mushrooms

Are there new US tariffs on Canadian mushrooms?

The US Commerce Department proposed an 8.26 percent tariff on most fresh Canadian mushrooms Tuesday, with some producers facing rates as high as 11.8 percent.

  • It is a small but very concrete example of the wider trade fight as Trump moves to end USMCA.

  • Three named Canadian producers each face their own individual tariff rate.

One more thing to watch if you work in agriculture or trade.

Calgary Stampede Wraps With Its Third Highest Attendance Ever

How many people attended the 2026 Calgary Stampede?

The 114th Calgary Stampede closed out Sunday with just over 1.41 million guests, the third highest total in its history.

  • Attendance dipped slightly for a second straight year after back to back records.

  • A chuckwagon collision that injured one horse renewed animal welfare questions.

A good reminder summer in Alberta is in full swing.

Spain Shocks France, Books First World Cup Final Since 2010

Did Spain beat France in the World Cup semifinal?

Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro scored as Spain beat France 2 to 0 Tuesday in the tournament's first semifinal, sending Spain to the final for the first time in 16 years.

  • Spain will face the winner of Wednesday's Argentina vs England semifinal.

  • ICE District's downtown watch party drew fans out for the match today.

One more big match to go before the final.

The US Just Reinstated a Naval Blockade on Iran

Is there a US naval blockade on Iran right now?

The interim ceasefire fully collapsed Tuesday as the US resumed a naval blockade on all ships entering or leaving Iranian ports, alongside a fourth straight day of airstrikes.

  • Iran has continued targeting tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Oil prices have been swinging on the news, which keeps this one relevant here at home.

A story still very much unfolding.
