Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Saturday!
Clear skies hold through the day with a high near 21C, easing into a calm evening near 18C, genuinely gorgeous weather for the first full weekend day.
Quick heads up: this weekend's event list grew so long again it earned its own separate issue, so keep an eye out for that one if you want the full rundown of everything happening from Friday through Sunday.
Mayor Knack has a new right hand at city hall, a coalition of advocates wants a real study on cyclist and pedestrian deaths on our streets, and thousands of runners are lacing up for the Servus Marathon's 35th year tomorrow. We also have Ottawa and Washington still stuck on a wide gap in tariff talks with five days left on the clock, a genuinely funny national cottage cheese shortage, and a look at Nigel Farage winning his seat back against a man dressed as a trash can. Plus today's This or That waiting for you below. Here is what is making news across Edmonton and the surrounding areas today.

🚴 Advocates Call for a Real Study on Cyclist and Pedestrian Deaths
Ever wonder if the size of the vehicle next to you at a crosswalk actually matters?
A coalition including Bike Edmonton, Paths for People, Bike Bus Alberta and the Edmonton Bike Coalition is asking Alberta's chief medical examiner to study pedestrian and cyclist deaths across the province, including whether poor sightlines on large SUVs and pickup trucks play a role.
The coalition wants the review to look specifically at vehicle size and design, not just driver behaviour.
It comes as cities across Alberta grapple with rising pedestrian and cyclist safety concerns.
Worth watching whether the province takes up the request.
🤝 Mayor Knack Names a New Chief of Staff
Who does the mayor lean on when the tough calls come in?
Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack has appointed Yetunde Oke, a public servant with more than two decades of municipal and provincial experience, as his new chief of staff.
Oke most recently served as director of intergovernmental affairs in the office of the city manager.
The appointment comes about a month after Blake Desjarlais stepped down from the role after just three months.
A fresh face steering things at city hall.
🏃 Servus Edmonton Marathon Turns 35 Tomorrow
Ready to cheer on 10,000 runners this weekend?
The Servus Edmonton Marathon marks its 35th year tomorrow with a record 10,000 participants and 100,000 dollars raised for local charities through the Charity Challenge, plus the Canadian Half Marathon Championship on the same course.
The race starts and finishes at the Edmonton Convention Centre and winds through the river valley.
20,000 dollars in prize money is on the line for the half marathon championship alone.
A great excuse to line the route and cheer someone on tomorrow.

🤝 A Big Gap Still Separates Canada and the US on Tariffs
With five days left, how far apart are Ottawa and Washington really?
A source briefed on the negotiations says a big gap remains between Canada and the US as the August 19 deadline for new 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods closes in, even as both sides insist talks are ongoing.
Alberta's oil and agriculture sectors are watching closely given how much cross border trade is on the line.
Canada's negotiating team is reportedly working a three step strategy to avoid the deadline hitting at all.
Five days on the clock and counting.
🧀 Canada's Cottage Cheese Shortage Has Dairy Processors Scrambling
Did you know cottage cheese was having a moment?
Canadian dairy processors are ramping up production to meet what is being called a genuine national cottage cheese shortage, a strange and oddly wholesome supply chain story.
Demand has outpaced supply enough that some grocery shelves are running thin.
Processors say increased output should ease things in the coming weeks.
A good excuse to stock up while you can.

🗳️ Nigel Farage Wins Back His Seat Against a Man Dressed as a Trash Can
Would you vote for a candidate named Count Binface?
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage won the Clacton byelection Friday, more than doubling the vote of his main rival, comedian Count Binface, in an election every mainstream British party chose to sit out entirely.
Farage triggered the byelection himself after quitting his seat during a gift disclosure investigation.
Count Binface's platform included capping croissant prices, and he took the loss in stride.
Politics can always use a little more absurdity.
