Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Sunday!
A low risk of an isolated, potentially strong thunderstorm lingers into this afternoon, then skies clear out tonight with a high near 23C and a low near 13C overnight.
We are saying goodbye to a beloved police K9 today, remembering two correctional officers and an inmate lost near Wainwright, watching Dutch elm disease creep into more Edmonton neighbourhoods, and gearing up for AC/DC at Commonwealth Stadium tonight. Plus a wildfire state of emergency out west, a meteor shower worth circling on your calendar, and rising tension in the Strait of Hormuz. Here is what is making news across Edmonton and the surrounding areas today.

🐕 Edmonton Says Goodbye to Retired Police Dog Larry, 15 Years After His Career Began in Medicine Hat
What does fifteen years of loyal service look like for a police dog who almost ended up somewhere else entirely?
PSD Larry has died at 15, closing out a career that saw him attend more than 1,400 calls and help make over 130 arrests alongside Sergeant Brian Parker with the Edmonton Police Service Canine Unit.
Larry came to Edmonton from the Medicine Hat Police Service after his first handler left policing to become an NHL referee.
He placed first in agility at the national police canine trials in 2018 before retiring the following year to a full time life with his family.
A quiet, good life, well earned.
🚔 Two Correctional Officers and an Inmate Killed in Highway Collision Near Wainwright
What happens when a routine transfer turns into a tragedy for three families at once?
Correctional officers Nicolae Serban of Sherwood Park and Ramandeep Kaur Maan, along with 24 year old inmate Kiara Mooswa, were killed Thursday when the van transferring her from the Edmonton Institution for Women collided with a box truck near Wainwright.
Tributes came in from Prime Minister Carney and the Correctional Service of Canada, who called the loss unimaginable.
RCMP collision investigators are still working to determine what happened at the intersection.
Our thoughts are with everyone touched by this loss.
🌳 Dutch Elm Disease Spreads to Downtown Edmonton and Delwood
How does a disease first found in Edmonton just two years ago end up downtown?
Two more Edmonton trees, one downtown and one in Delwood, have tested positive for Dutch elm disease, bringing the city's confirmed case count to 16 since it first showed up here in 2024.
Removal crews began work Friday, and any elms within 20 metres of an infected tree will also come down.
The city is asking residents to skip bringing firewood in from other regions and to call 311 if they spot a tree showing signs of infection.
Worth a look next time you are walking under an elm.
🎸 AC/DC Rolls Into Commonwealth Stadium Tonight
What does it take to fill Commonwealth Stadium on a Sunday night?
AC/DC's Power Up Tour lands at Commonwealth Stadium tonight with special guests The Pretty Reckless, gates open at 5:30pm ahead of a 7pm show.
A pop up at The Starlite Room ran all weekend with tour props, merch and a free gift for early guests.
Expect parking restrictions in the surrounding neighbourhoods, accessible entry runs through gates 2, 6, 9 and 11.
Loud night ahead for the neighbourhood, in the best way.

🔥 British Columbia Declares State of Emergency as Wildfire Forces Thousands to Flee
How fast can a wildfire empty out two entire towns?
The Bald Range wildfire near Summerland grew explosively to more than 100 square kilometres over the weekend, prompting evacuation orders for all of Summerland and thousands more in Peachland, with helicopter rescues underway for people trapped behind the fire line.
British Columbia declared a provincial state of emergency Saturday, its largest evacuation event of the summer so far, and RCMP are investigating a possible death.
Highway 97 remains closed through the fire zone south of Summerland.
Keeping the whole province in mind today.
🌠 A Meteor Shower and a Partial Solar Eclipse Both Peak Next Week
When was the last time the sky handed us two shows in one night?
Canada gets a rare double header the night of August 12 into 13, a partial solar eclipse in the afternoon followed by the Perseid meteor shower peaking under a moonless sky.
The Perseids are expected to produce up to 60 meteors an hour at their peak, one of the best showers of the year.
Dark, moonless skies make this an especially good year to catch it if you can get away from city lights.
Something worth circling on the calendar.

🚢 Iranian Missile Strikes a UAE Tanker in the Strait of Hormuz
How many more tankers can be hit before the strait effectively stays closed for good?
Iran's Revolutionary Guard struck an ADNOC tanker with a missile while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz early Saturday, the sixteenth such attack on a UAE vessel since the war began, though no injuries were reported.
The UAE called it an act of piracy, Qatar backed the condemnation, and Iran is still holding out for compensation from the US before fully reopening the strait.
Talks between Iran and Oman over a temporary shipping route continue to inch closer to a deal.
A story worth watching for anyone who fills up at the pump.
