Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Tuesday! ⛈️

Tuesday brings a risk of thunderstorms through the day, so keep an umbrella within reach. In this issue, Alberta flips the switch on regulated online betting, a massive carbon capture deal locks in for the oilsands, and U of A dental students are handing out free dental work.

Alberta's Online Betting Market Goes Live

What changed for online gambling in Alberta this week?

Alberta's regulated iGaming system flipped on at midnight, making us the second province after Ontario to let private operators like FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM into the ring.

  • Nearly 50 companies paid registration fees, though only about 20 are expected ready for customers right away.

  • Self exclusion tools and spending limits are built in from day one to help keep things safer for players.

Big shift for anyone who has been placing bets online.

A Massive Carbon Capture Deal Locks In for the Oilsands

What is the Pathways agreement Alberta just signed with Ottawa?

Alberta, Ottawa and five major oilsands producers signed off Monday on the Pathways carbon capture project, a deal tied directly to the proposed new pipeline to the BC coast.

  • Canadian Natural, Imperial, Suncor, Cenovus and ConocoPhillips are all on board, with construction targeted to proceed in stages.

  • The project aims to capture about six million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by the mid 2030s.

A big one for Alberta's energy future either way you look at it.

Free Dental Work, Courtesy of U of A Students

Can you really get free dental work done in Edmonton?

A University of Alberta program is letting patients get real dental procedures done for free while dental students earn their IV sedation certification.

  • Appointments run select days throughout the year, open to anyone with an Alberta Health Care number.

  • Patients get quality care at no cost while future dentists get hands on sedation experience.

Worth bookmarking for the next time a dental bill makes you wince.

A Couple's Quick Thinking Saved Lives Off the BC Coast

What happened when a charter boat sank off BC this weekend?

Brian Angus and Dorothy Stauffer were out sailing near the mouth of the Fraser River Sunday when they spotted people in the water after a charter boat went down in the Strait of Georgia.

  • The couple issued a Mayday call, then used their dinghy to pull survivors toward safety one by one.

  • Four people were rescued, though six others are presumed to have drowned.

A hard reminder to always wear a life jacket out on the water.

Iran Shuts the Strait of Hormuz, Strikes Five Gulf Nations

What is happening with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz right now?

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz is fully closed after the US carried out a third round of strikes, and Tehran hit Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar and Oman in response over the weekend.

  • The standoff began when Iran fired at and disabled a commercial ship passing through the strait.

  • Oil prices are moving on the news, which keeps this one relevant for Alberta's energy sector.

A lot resting on a narrow strip of water right now.
