Good morning, Edmonton.
It is a cool and rainy one today with showers through the morning and a high of 13°C, so if you had outdoor plans you may want to hold them until the clouds clear this evening. While you wait out the rain, there is a lot to catch up on. An Edmonton kid who grew up here, from humble beginnings is about to lead Canada at a home World Cup. Alberta disability payments are getting cut in a way that is hitting couples especially hard. And the Iran ceasefire took another hit overnight. Grab your favourite beverage, let us get into it.💛

From humble beginnings to Captaining Canada at a Home World Cup
Alphonso Davies, who grew up right here in Edmonton after his family fled Liberia, has been named captain of Canada's men's national soccer team for the FIFA World Cup on home soil this summer.
Davies made his professional debut in Edmonton at 15, went on to star at Bayern Munich and win multiple titles including a UEFA Champions League, and joined the national squad here in Edmonton for a June 1 friendly against Uzbekistan, which Canada won 2-0.
He managed a hamstring injury through the camp but was on the pitch and on home soil, in the city where his Canadian story started.
A kid who arrived here with nothing is about to lead Canada into a home World Cup. That is an Edmonton story worth holding onto.
Alberta Couples Living With Disabilities Are About to Lose Hundreds of Dollars a Month
Thousands of Albertans on AISH are being moved to the new Alberta Disability Assistance Program starting July 1, and couples where both partners receive support are facing some of the steepest cuts.
Individual payments drop by $200 a month under ADAP. Starting in August, couples where both partners receive support will each be paid only 88 per cent of the individual rate, meaning a household can lose up to $470 combined every month.
The province says the new program allows recipients to earn more employment income before benefits are reduced, but critics point out that many people on AISH physically cannot work and the timing alongside rising costs is brutal.
A $200 top-up runs until the end of 2027. For couples like Monique Peters and her husband in east-central Alberta, that still does not close the gap.
An Edmonton MP and Former Enoch Cree Nation Chief Says First Nations Votes Could Decide the Referendum
Conservative MP Billy Morin, who represents Edmonton Northwest and served as chief of Enoch Cree Nation before entering federal politics, says he will spend the summer talking to Indigenous leaders across Alberta about getting out to vote on October 19.
Morin says this referendum is different because it directly threatens the treaties, which are the constitutionally recognized, nation-to-nation agreements signed between the Crown and Indigenous peoples more than a century ago.
First Nations in Alberta have already fought the separatist movement in court, winning a ruling in May that quashed one petition on the grounds the province failed to consult. Smith has since appealed and added the separation question to the existing referendum.
With Enoch Cree Nation sitting just west of Edmonton, this is about as local as the referendum story gets.

Trump Just Hit Canada With a New Tariff, This Time Over Forced Labour
The Trump administration proposed an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canada and about 60 other countries Wednesday, saying those countries have failed to properly enforce a ban on goods made with forced labour.
Prime Minister Carney said it was "not a surprise" and noted that goods complying with the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement are still exempt, which he said keeps Canada in a better position than most other trading partners.
Canada's Trade Minister LeBlanc was in Washington Wednesday for CUSMA review talks ahead of the July 1 renewal deadline.
Another tariff threat on another day. The CUSMA clock is ticking and both sides know it.
Canada Is Not Kicking Out the U.S. Ambassador Even After His 51st State Cheerleading
U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra shared Trump's latest "51st state" comment on his official government account Tuesday after Trump used Canada's technical recession as a reason to renew the annexation talk. Calls came from Canadians to expel Hoekstra. Carney said no.
"It's an administration that we have to work with," Carney told reporters, pointing to LeBlanc's Washington trip as evidence the bilateral relationship is being actively managed.
A House of Commons petition calling for Hoekstra's removal has gathered over 14,600 signatures. Poilievre called Trump's comment "ridiculous" but urged focus on domestic issues instead.
Carney is keeping the channel open. Whether that is wisdom or weakness is a question Edmonton readers can answer for themselves.
$992 Billion in Art Could Change Hands. Why Are These 71,105 Investors Paying Close Attention?
Deloitte ran the numbers. They project UHNW art and collectibles wealth -- already at $2.5 trillion -- to hit $3.47 trillion by 2030.
The institutional world has been quietly preparing for this. Back in 2011, 25% of wealth managers surveyed offered art-related services. In 2024, 51%. Family offices now average a 13.4% allocation to art and collectibles.
And it’s not just because they love art. It’s because they like the math.
These positions were built over decades through private dealer relationships most investors never had. The access just wasn't there.
Masterworks is changing that by allowing individuals to invest in shares of blue-chip artwork by artists like Basquiat, Warhol, and Picasso. Their track record to-date:
71,000+ investors
$1.3B deployed across 525+ artworks
29 closed sales
Net annualized returns like 16.5%, 17.6%, and 17.8%, not including those unsold.

The Iran Ceasefire Just Got Hit Again and Oil Is Back Above $98
The U.S. and Iran exchanged attacks Wednesday in what analysts are calling the most serious test of the fragile ceasefire since it began, sending Brent crude climbing to $98.22 per barrel, up more than 10 per cent on the week.
Wall Street opened mixed and the TSX pulled back 0.4 per cent as markets weighed the latest exchange against lingering hopes that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could still come together.
Peace talk progress, when it happens, has been driving oil prices down. Every escalation like this pushes them right back up.
Alberta royalty revenues track with Brent. This one has a direct line to the provincial budget and your energy bills.

The largest IPO in history is coming. Where will all that liquid money go?
SpaceX just filed for an IPO valued at up to $1.75 trillion. When that much capital becomes liquid all at once, where it goes next is the big question.
Meanwhile, spring art auctions in NY cleared $2.5 billion, with 15+ new artist records.
Prized, physical assets with fixed and scarce supply. When the ultra-wealthy get liquid, it’s one of the markets they reach for to diversify.
Masterworks lets you into that art market without needing the nine figures. Its members invest in shares of blue-chip artwork by artists like Banksy, Basquiat and Warhol.
The track record to-date?
