Good morning, Edmonton, Happy Saturday! 🎉

Canada got its first ever World Cup point yesterday and if you watched the second half from your couch or from ICE District, you already know the feeling. Meanwhile Edmonton news kept moving overnight, so let's get into it together.

Check out the sponsor for this issue; checking out what they’re about helps us keep the lights on. Your support in this is so appreciated.

It is a bright and sunny Saturday out there, with a high of 22°C on the way, which feels about right for a weekend with this much going on.💛

The Oilers coaching search is frozen while the NHL investigates Babcock

The NHL has formally launched an investigation into Mike Babcock following a request from the NHLPA, and the Oilers are expected to back off their pursuit until it wraps up.

  • The players' union says it has received significant additional claims from former Columbus Blue Jackets players that were never made public in 2023, when Babcock resigned before coaching a single game.

  • The NHL has given no timeline for how long the investigation will take, leaving Edmonton without a head coach and the search on hold.

The Oilers coaching search just got a lot more complicated.

Alberta just hired someone to put an actual number on what leaving Canada would cost

The province has commissioned the University of Calgary School of Public Policy to study the full financial cost of Alberta separating from Canada, with a report due before the October 19 referendum.

  • An expert advisory panel led by economist Jack Mintz, including former Saskatchewan and Alberta finance ministers, will review the findings before they go public.

  • Smith puts the separation startup cost at $400 billion. Separatist leaders dispute that number, estimating $5.7 billion.

Albertans will get an independent cost estimate before they vote in October.

Edmonton detached home prices are climbing while condos slide in the other direction

The REALTORS Association of Edmonton released its May 2026 numbers and the market is pulling in two directions.

  • Detached homes averaged $604,744, up 4.8 per cent year over year. Condo prices slid to $206,282, down 8.7 per cent from April.

  • Inventory across all types sits 23.9 per cent above May 2025 levels, and Edmonton prices overall remain well below the national median.

Whether you are buying, selling or just watching, the Edmonton market is not moving as one.

Canada earned its first ever World Cup point yesterday and Edmontonians were watching

Substitute Cyle Larin scored in the 78th minute to rescue a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Canada's first ever home World Cup match at BMO Field in Toronto.

  • Canada had never earned a single point across its previous two World Cup appearances, going scoreless in 1986 and eliminated in the group stage in 2022.

  • Edmonton's ICE District Fan Park was packed for the match, and the draw sends Canada into the group stage with something to build on.

Canada plays its next group game on June 18 and for the first time, there is actually something to look forward to.

Pakistan says a US-Iran deal text has been finalized. Iran says it is still deliberating.

Pakistan's Prime Minister wrote June 12 that peace "has never been this close." But Iran and the US immediately gave contradictory signals about what had actually been agreed.

  • Iranian media published what it says are draft deal terms, including Tehran's right to enrich uranium. Trump said that version had "NOTHING to do" with what was on the table and accused Iran of negotiating in bad faith.

  • Senior US officials say the two sides are about 75 per cent of the way to a memorandum of understanding to end the conflict.

A deal may be close. Whether both sides are agreeing to the same deal is a different question.

Carolina leads Vegas 3-2 in the Stanley Cup Final and Game 6 is tonight

The Hurricanes won Game 5 four to two on June 11 and are one win away from their first Stanley Cup since 2006.

  • Jordan Staal scored for the fifth consecutive game, Andrei Svechnikov added two power play goals and goalie Brandon Bussi made 23 saves.

  • Game 6 goes tonight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. If Vegas wins, the series goes to a deciding Game 7.

One team wins the Cup tonight or the whole thing gets decided Sunday.
