Crash Expert: “This Looks Like 1929” → 71,105 Diversifying Here

Mark Spitznagel, who made $1B in a single day during the 2015 flash crash, warned markets are mimicking 1929. Seems extreme but we did just see the worst quarter for the S&P since 2022.

So it’s not so surprising that Vanguard and Goldman Sachs forecasted 5% and 3% annual S&P returns respectively for 2024-2034.

Late last year, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slok put it this way: "expect zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade."

Almost no one knows this, but postwar and contemporary art appreciated 10.2% annually with near-zero correlation to equities from 1995–2025 overall.*

And sure… billionaires like Bezos can make headlines at auction, but what about the rest of us?

Happy Wednesday Edmonton and sister towns!

Summer is properly arriving this week and so is some big news, from a half billion dollar energy investment landing in our backyard to the last Canadian hockey team fighting for its playoff life tonight. Grab your coffee and let us get into it.💛

Two Health Facilities Are Nearly Ready on Enoch Cree Nation

Two community health facilities are almost open on Enoch Cree Nation west of Edmonton, bringing a pharmacy and chartered surgical clinic alongside a culturally grounded addiction recovery centre to the area this summer.

  • The Maskekosihk Recovery Community will support people healing from substance use, with a summer 2026 opening targeted once regulatory approvals are in place.

  • The pharmacy and surgical clinic will serve Nation members and surrounding area residents, adding much needed health capacity just west of the city.

Is this the kind of made in Alberta health solution you want to see more of?

🏒 The Last Canadian Team Standing Is Fighting for Its Life Tonight

The Montreal Canadiens, the only Canadian team left in the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs, trail the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals after Andrei Svechnikov scored the overtime winner Sunday to give Carolina a 3-2 win.

  • Carolina bounced back from a 6-2 Game 1 blowout to win the next two in overtime, with Game 4 tonight in Montreal at 8 pm Eastern.

  • Every other Canadian franchise, including the Oilers who fell to Anaheim in Round 1, is already home for the summer.

Are you cheering for the Habs tonight just because they are the last Canadian team left?

Pembina Pipeline Just Approved a $570 Million Plant in Our Backyard

Pembina Pipeline has officially greenlighted a $570 million natural gas extraction plant in Alberta's Industrial Heartland northeast of Edmonton, tied to a long-term deal supplying Dow Chemical's Fort Saskatchewan petrochemical facility.

  • The Heartland Extraction Plant will process 750 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, with operations starting in late 2029.

  • Pembina will supply Dow with up to 57,500 barrels of ethane per day under the expanded deal, feeding the Path2Zero plastics facility now under construction in Fort Saskatchewan.

Half a billion dollars landing right in our backyard. What does this kind of investment mean for the Edmonton region in your eyes?

Your Luggage Could Get You Arrested Abroad. Here Is What W5 Found.

A W5 investigation has exposed an organized crime scheme inside Canada's largest airports where insiders are switching bag tags on innocent travelers' luggage, leaving unsuspecting Canadians facing drug smuggling charges at destinations where the crime carries the death penalty.

  • At least 17 innocent Canadians have been detained abroad for drug smuggling, all cleared after bag swaps were traced back to airport insiders who had passed full security clearances.

  • Transport Canada pledged action May 25 after W5 found restricted baggage areas at Pearson could be entered without a credential swipe.

Iran Is Calling the Latest US Strikes a "Flagrant Violation" as Oil Climbs Back to $99

Iran's foreign ministry accused the United States of acting in bad faith Tuesday after US forces struck Iranian boats and missile sites, sending Brent crude climbing from $96 back toward $99 a barrel as peace deal hopes faded again.

  • US forces struck Iranian boats and missile sites in what CENTCOM called a defensive action, but Iran called it a flagrant ceasefire violation.

  • A tanker explosion in the Gulf of Oman added more uncertainty Tuesday morning, and every dollar shift in Brent crude lands directly on Alberta royalty revenues.

The back and forth continues. Are you still following the Iran situation or has the news cycle worn you down?

WHO Says the Ebola Outbreak Is Outpacing Them. Suspected Deaths Are Now at 220.

The World Health Organization's chief warned Tuesday the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda is spreading faster than global health teams can contain it, with suspected deaths reaching 220 and the first European scares now emerging.

  • More than 900 suspected cases span three DRC provinces and Uganda, with WHO upgrading the DRC national risk assessment to very high.

  • Two Italian aid workers hospitalized in Milan after returning from Uganda both tested negative. Canada already has enhanced Ebola screening at major airports following the Ontario traveller scare earlier this month.
