Edmonton's Airport Is Shipping Live Horses to Japan for Slaughter and a Welfare Group Wants It Stopped Now

An animal welfare organization is demanding a full ban on live horse shipments out of Edmonton International Airport after investigators uncovered deeply disturbing conditions.

The Moment Horses bred on Alberta feedlots are being crated and flown from Edmonton International Airport to Japan, where their meat is served raw as a luxury delicacy. Animal Justice, a Canadian animal law organization, filed a formal complaint with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency this week demanding the practice be banned immediately.

  • Investigators documented horses arriving at the airport visibly injured, limping and dragging their legs before being loaded onto aircraft

  • Federal regulations require horses to rest, eat and drink before flights over a certain length, investigators say those rules are being routinely ignored

  • Canada is one of the last countries in the world still allowing live horse exports for slaughter

  • Japan is the primary destination, where the raw horse meat dish known as basashi is considered a high end delicacy

Does Edmonton International Airport have any business being part of this supply chain? A lot of Edmontonians would say no.

Care Workers at Two Edmonton Senior Communities Just Made a Big Move

Over 100 people caring for seniors at two Edmonton retirement communities have filed to unionize, and a decision could come as soon as this Thursday.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees filed two certification applications on behalf of workers employed by Arch Services Ltd., which provides staffing for Christenson Communities. The facilities involved are Village at Westmount and Glastonbury Village, both luxury retirement communities near Edmonton.

  • Around 40 workers at Village at Westmount and around 60 at Glastonbury Village are included in the applications, covering health care aides, licensed practical nurses and all other employees,

  • Alberta Labour Relations Board hearings are scheduled for this Thursday, March 19

  • Workers need support from 40% of staff to file, in this case at least 17 from Westmount and 25 from Glastonbury already signed on

  • AUPE filed a similar application in December for workers at Devonshire Village, another Christenson facility, those workers are still waiting on their certification

If you or someone you love lives in a retirement community, this story is worth following closely.

Alberta's Rural Communities Are Owed $250 Million in Unpaid Oil and Gas Taxes, And Most of It May Be Gone Forever

Alberta just released a new plan to stop oil and gas companies from skipping their municipal tax bills, but the bad news is the money already owed may never come back.

A report released Monday by the province, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the Alberta Energy Regulator outlines 17 recommendations to crack down on delinquent oil and gas companies, but acknowledged that $250 million in unpaid taxes accumulated over the years is likely unrecoverable.

  • One key recommendation: oil and gas companies must stay current on their property taxes or risk losing their right to keep producing

  • Rural Municipalities president Kara Westerlund warned that rural Alberta is facing close to a $25 billion infrastructure deficit in roads, bridges, culverts and water systems by end of 2026

  • The government said 96% of oil and gas taxes are paid on time, but the delinquent 4% has caused massive damage to communities like those in Leduc County, Strathcona County and Parkland County

  • The NDP called the plan overdue and said they will believe it when they see real action

This hits every rural municipality in our region. What do you think, should companies face tougher consequences for skipping their tax bills?

Pierre Poilievre Wants a Tariff Free Auto Deal with the US, and Alberta is Watching Closely

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre rolled out his boldest trade proposal yet on Sunday, a one for one tariff free auto pact with the United States that he says protects Canadian jobs and forces a fair deal with Washington.

Poilievre announced the plan in Windsor after meeting with executives from General Motors and Ford in Detroit. The idea is simple: for every vehicle built in Canada, the manufacturer gets to sell one into Canada duty free. He says Trump should say yes because it grows American production too.

  • The plan targets bringing Canadian auto production back up to two million vehicles per year within a decade, up from 1.2 million last year

  • GST would be removed from all Canadian made vehicles under the proposal

  • Vehicles using Chinese or Russian connected software would be banned from the program

  • Polls currently show the Liberals leading nationally, putting added pressure on Poilievre to land a compelling economic message

For Albertans connected to manufacturing, energy and trade, what happens between Canada and the US is never just politics. It is jobs and paycheques. What do you think of this plan?
