Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Thursday!

Today brings a bit of a breather with a mix of sun and cloud and a high near 25C, a welcome change after days of storm cleanup.

Calgary is sending help our way, a big Alberta housing deal just landed in Red Deer, and there is some very hard news to share about a boy so many of us have been hoping for. Here is what is making news across Edmonton and the surrounding areas this Thursday.

🚨 Homicide Investigation Opens After a Deadly West Edmonton Shooting

What happened at that west Edmonton business?

Police are investigating a shooting outside a west end business Tuesday that left a 39 year old man dead, with the EPS Homicide Section now leading the file.

  • The shooting happened near 112 Avenue and 149 Street around 11:35 in the morning.

  • Investigators are asking anyone with dashcam footage from that hour to come forward.

If you were anywhere near there Tuesday, your footage could matter.

🌳 Calgary Sends a Crew North to Help Edmonton Dig Out

Why is Calgary sending help to Edmonton?

After back to back storms left thousands of downed branches and closures across the city, Calgary is sending arborists, equipment and crews north to help with cleanup.

  • The deployment includes 12 forestry experts plus mobility and waste crews arriving over the coming days.

  • Edmonton will reimburse Calgary for every cost.

Neighbourly really is the word for it.

🏗️ Ottawa and Alberta Sign Off on 510 Million Dollars for Housing

What did Carney and Smith actually announce in Red Deer?

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith signed a deal in Red Deer putting more than 510 million dollars toward water and wastewater infrastructure so Alberta municipalities can build more homes.

  • Alberta is putting in up to 428 million dollars of its own toward eligible projects.

  • The funding is meant to help unlock tens of thousands of new homes across the province.

Worth watching for what it means closer to home.

😢 Search for Parker Wells Ends in Heartbreak

What happened to the missing Calgary boy?

Calgary police confirmed Wednesday that the body of 11 year old Parker Wells was found inside a storm drain pipe off Deerfoot Trail, closing out a two week search that drew hundreds of volunteers.

  • Police believe it was a case of misadventure, not foul play.

  • Parker was last seen July 16 and was known to be nonverbal and autistic.

Sending every bit of care to his family today.

💰 Your OAS or GIS Payment Just Got a Bump

How much more will seniors see in their account?

Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement payments rose 1.2 percent with Wednesday's deposit, the largest single quarter increase of the year.

  • Seniors 75 and older can now receive up to 827 dollars a month in OAS alone.

  • The increase landed automatically, no application needed.

Worth a look at your account if this applies to you or someone you love.

🎗️ Uganda Declares Itself Free of Ebola

Is Uganda's Ebola outbreak really over?

Uganda's Ministry of Health officially closed out the 2026 Ebola outbreak this week, crediting fast contact tracing and fully mapped transmission chains for stopping the spread early.

  • The outbreak infected 20 people since May, with 18 recoveries.

  • Health officials say the country remains open for travel and business.

Good news is still news.

🚀 Iran Strikes US Forces in Jordan as the Ceasefire Frays

What happened to the pause in the Iran conflict?

Iran fired missiles at a US base in Jordan Wednesday, ending a five day pause in hostilities just as President Trump was meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House.

  • All missiles were intercepted, and no injuries were reported.

  • Oil prices jumped more than 4 percent within hours of the news.

Worth keeping an eye on the pump price this week.
