Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Sunday, neighbours! 🌦️

Canada's historic World Cup run ended yesterday with a 3 to 0 loss to Morocco in Houston, a south Edmonton neighbourhood is fighting new infill housing with an old legal trick, and police are asking for help after a suspicious death in Queen Mary Park. Expect a mix of sun and cloud with a good chance of showers today, so keep an umbrella handy if you are still out enjoying the Street Performers Festival downtown. Grab your coffee and let's get into it ☕

🏘️ A South Edmonton Neighbourhood Is Fighting New Housing With an Old Legal Trick

What is happening with infill housing in south Edmonton right now?

Homeowners in the Duggan and Rideau Park communities have placed a restrictive covenant on their properties that blocks new infill development, a legal tool most people have never heard of until now.

  • The covenant limits what can be built on these lots for years to come, even if city zoning would otherwise allow it.

  • Similar fights over infill density have been playing out across older Edmonton neighbourhoods for months.

A quiet legal move with a big impact on how these streets will look for decades.

🚨 Police Are Asking for Help After a Suspicious Death in Central Edmonton

What do police know about the death in Queen Mary Park?

Edmonton police are asking anyone with security or dash cam footage from the Queen Mary Park area to come forward after a death there is now being treated as suspicious.

  • Investigators have not released details about the victim or a suspect.

  • The area has seen a visible police presence since the death was reported.

If you were nearby and have footage, this is the moment to share it.

  • The fight over coal mining near the Rockies headwaters has been simmering in Alberta for years.

This is not the last we will hear about Water Not Coal.

Postgres Didn't Fail You. Your Architecture Did.

Adding a second database was supposed to fix things. Now you manage sync, drift, and pipelines on top of queries that are still slow.

TimescaleDB extends Postgres instead. Hypertables, 95% compression, continuous aggregates. One database. No pipeline.

⚽ Canada's Historic World Cup Run Ends, and Montreal's Moroccan Community Erupts in Celebration

How did Canada's World Cup run end and why is Montreal celebrating anyway?

Canada's first ever Round of 16 appearance ended Saturday with a 3 to 0 loss to Morocco in Houston, but that same result sent Moroccan communities across the country, especially in Montreal, into the streets in celebration of their own team's historic advance.

  • Morocco's Montreal born keeper Yassine Bounou made the saves that shut Canada out.

  • Prime Minister Mark Carney and other leaders publicly praised Canada's run as the best in program history.

A heartbreaking loss for Canada and a joyful night for Moroccan Canadians, both true at once.

🕵️ A New Government Report Says Iran May Have Directed Attacks Inside Canada

What does Canada's new intelligence report say about Iran?

A newly released federal intelligence assessment says Iran may have directed or supported recent attacks on Canadian soil, raising fresh questions about foreign interference within our borders.

  • The report points to a pattern of activity that officials say goes beyond simple monitoring of the diaspora.

  • Canada has expelled Iranian diplomats in the past over similar concerns.

A serious allegation that will likely shape how Ottawa handles Iran going forward.

A tense and fast moving situation with no clear end in sight.

🌋 Venezuela's Acting Leader Defends Her Earthquake Response as Her Mandate Runs Out

What is happening with Venezuela's earthquake recovery as the acting president's term ends?

Venezuela's acting president is defending her government's response to the earthquakes that killed more than 180 people last month, just as her 180 day mandate is set to expire. This is a follow up to the disaster we first covered here at The Urban Brief a little over a week ago.

  • Canada pledged 5 million dollars in aid after the original disaster struck.

  • Critics say recovery efforts have been too slow for hard hit communities still waiting on help.

A leadership question layered on top of an already painful recovery.

BET YOU DID NOT KNOW 🤔

With Canada's World Cup run now over, here is some perspective on just how far this team has come.

Before this tournament, Canada had only ever qualified for the World Cup once, back in 1986 in Mexico. That team played three games, lost all three, and never scored a single goal, the only nation in that tournament to be shut out completely.

Forty years later, this year's team won its group, advanced out of the group stage for the first time ever, and reached the Round of 16 before finally being stopped by Morocco. Whatever happens next, this is already the best World Cup run in Canadian history.

However today feels, that is a real thing to be proud of. See you tomorrow, neighbours.
