🛫 Your Airport Just Started Rewarding You
Edmonton International Airport unveiled YEGplus on Tuesday, billed as Canada's first airport loyalty program.
Enrollment is free at YEGplus.com and members earn points on purchases at YEG shops, restaurants and parking. Three tiers unlock over time: Essential on signup, Silver after $500 in qualifying annual spend and Gold after $1,500
Points can be redeemed for parking reservations, gift cards and contest entries
The airport says the program is built for everyday travellers, not just frequent flyers. If you pass through YEG regularly on any basis, there is no reason not to sign up

🔥 The Wildfire Alerts Near Edmonton Are Lifting
Some very welcome news for communities west and northwest of the city.
Parkland County lifted its wildfire alert for the Beau Rand Estates and Range Road 10 area on Tuesday after crews held the fire at 20 hectares overnight. The area had been on alert since Sunday
The Sandy Beach evacuation order in Sturgeon County, triggered after three homes burned last weekend, has also been cleared
Fire bans remain across Parkland, Sturgeon and Leduc counties until further notice. The season is far from over but the immediate threats around Edmonton have eased
For anyone in those communities who spent the past few days watching the fire updates closely, you can breathe a little easier today. ❤️
🌵 An Edmonton Distillery Just Launched an "Albertan-ish" Tequila
True tequila must legally be made in Mexico. Shiddy's Distilling found a creative middle path.
Shiddy's made their new reposado in Jalisco, then brought it to Alberta and aged it in bourbon barrels for almost a full year. The result is a tequila with a decidedly local finish
They are calling it "Albertan-ish," which is a very good name for a product landing in the middle of a trade war where buying local has become a real point of pride around here
Shiddy's is an Alberta operation building a following one smart idea at a time

📜 Canada Has a New Governor General
PM Carney made an announcement on Tuesday that is genuinely hard to argue with.
Louise Arbour will be Canada's next Governor General, replacing Mary Simon. King Charles has given his approval and the swearing in happens in early June
Arbour spent 1996 to 1999 as chief prosecutor at the Hague for the international criminal tribunals on the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. She then served on the Supreme Court of Canada from 2001 to 2004 and was later UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
Upon her swearing in, she becomes Commander in Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces
She has spent a career standing up for people who had no one else standing up for them. Canada could not have done much better than this appointment.
🏒 The Maple Leafs Just Won the Draft Lottery
Edmonton, this is not the headline we were hoping for on their behalf.
The Toronto Maple Leafs won the 2026 NHL draft lottery on Tuesday evening and secured the first overall pick. It is the first time the Leafs have won the lottery since they selected Auston Matthews in 2016
Gavin McKenna from Whitehorse, Yukon is the consensus top prospect. He put up 51 points in 35 games at Penn State this season. The word "generational" is being used a lot right now and nobody seems to be exaggerating
The Vancouver Canucks entered with the best lottery odds at 25.5 percent and slipped to third. San Jose picks second. The draft takes place in Buffalo on June 26 and 27
For Oilers fans: Edmonton made the playoffs this year and would pick in the 17 to 24 range. But the team traded its first round pick to Chicago in the Mangiapane deal, so there is no Oilers first round selection at all this June. The rebuild conversation is officially open for the summer.
🚢 Day 67: Ceasefire Holds, But the Strait Is Still Shut
Oil prices pulled back on Tuesday after a tense 24 hours in the waterway.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the US ceasefire with Iran technically remains in place, which eased some of the alarm from Day 66's naval confrontation. Brent crude fell roughly four percent to close near $109.87 per barrel
But commercial shipping companies are still refusing to transit the Strait of Hormuz despite the US military escort operation launched on Monday. Only two US-flagged merchant ships have crossed. The Strait is still effectively closed to regular traffic
Iran continues to warn of a harsh response to any continued US military presence in the waterway
The price dropped, but the problem has not gone anywhere.
