🍁 Carney Told Canadians This Weekend That Our Close Ties to the US Have Become a Weakness. He Plans to Change That.
This is a significant shift in how Canada is talking about its relationship with its neighbour.
In a 10-minute video address posted Sunday, PM Mark Carney said Canada's historically close economic ties to the US were once a strength but have become weaknesses that must be corrected. He said US tariffs have returned to levels not seen since the Great Depression and workers in auto, steel and lumber are under real threat
Carney held up a small toy soldier of General Isaac Brock, the British commander who died defending Canada from a US invasion in the War of 1812, saying Canada has faced threats to its sovereignty before and come through them. He promised regular video updates to Canadians going forward
The plan Carney outlined includes attracting $1 trillion in new investment, doubling clean energy capacity, reducing trade barriers between provinces and signing new trade deals with partners beyond the US. "Hope is not a plan and nostalgia is not a strategy," he said
Alberta's energy sector has always been tightly linked to US markets. How Carney follows through on this shift will matter enormously for this province. What do you make of his message?
🛒 Alberta Is Sitting Down With the Country's Biggest Grocery Chains This Week. Your Food Bill Is on the Agenda.
Danielle Smith is hearing what every Albertan is feeling at the checkout.
Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally, who has a background in the grocery business, is meeting with some of Canada's largest grocery chains to discuss what can be done to bring down the cost of food staples. Premier Smith says Albertans are frustrated and she named eggs, ham, chicken and milk as everyday items that have become unaffordable for many families
The meetings come as Alberta recorded the steepest food bank increase in the country. According to Food Banks Canada, food bank visits across Canada have doubled since 2019 and rose another 5.2 percent in 2025. Alberta's increase was the sharpest of any province at 21.8 percent year over year
No specific measures have been announced yet. The province has not said which grocers it is meeting with or when results from the discussions would be shared with the public
This is a conversation long overdue. When 19 percent of Alberta food bank visitors are employed people, the problem is not who is shopping, it is what things cost. What would you want the province to push for in these meetings?

⚓ The US Fired on and Seized an Iranian Cargo Ship in the Gulf of Oman. Oil Prices Are Rising Again.
The brief opening of the Strait of Hormuz is over.
On Sunday, the USS Spruance fired several rounds into the engine room of the Iranian cargo ship Touska in the Gulf of Oman and Marines boarded and seized the vessel after it tried to bypass the US naval blockade. Iran has vowed retaliation. No tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday
The ceasefire between the US and Iran expires Wednesday. A second round of peace talks was scheduled for Monday in Islamabad but Iran announced Sunday it would not attend, citing the US blockade as a breach of the ceasefire. Trump responded by threatening to knock out every power plant and bridge in Iran if no deal is reached
For Albertans, this matters directly at the pump. Oil prices fell sharply last Friday when the Strait briefly reopened. With the Strait now closed again and a seized ship in the news, those gains could reverse. The federal gas tax cut that started today saves you 10 cents per litre, but global oil prices moving higher will offset some of that relief
This situation is changing by the hour. Alberta's energy sector, gas prices and global markets are all watching Wednesday's ceasefire expiry very closely.
