Hey Edmonton! Happy Monday!
Welcome to what is shaping up to be a genuinely historic week. Three homes burned down in Sturgeon County this weekend, an Alberta story four months in the making lands at Elections Alberta this morning, and Connor McDavid said the kind of thing you do not easily walk back. There is a lot in today's issue. Grab your coffee and let us get into it.💛

🔥 Three Homes Are Gone in Sturgeon County and the Fire Is Not Done Yet
Fire season has arrived early and hard in one Alberta summer village, and residents are still on standby to leave.
A wildfire destroyed three homes and damaged a fourth in Sandy Beach, a summer village about 65 kilometres northwest of Edmonton; Sturgeon County declared a local state of emergency Saturday after the fire started in one residence and spread before crews could stop it
More than 60 firefighters from Morinville, Alexander First Nation, Parkland County and Lac Ste. Anne County were on scene; the fire is contained to two hectares but an evacuation alert remains active because wind could push it back toward Lakeshore Drive
No injuries have been reported; residents along Lakeshore Drive and the east side of Sandy Beach are being told to keep their bags packed and be ready to move on short notice
Nobody plans for this kind of Saturday. If you know anyone near Sandy Lake this morning, it is worth checking in.
📋 After 120 Days, the Petition Is at the Door
This morning, Alberta's independence movement walks up to Elections Alberta and hands over something that took four months and a province full of doorsteps to build.
Stay Free Alberta delivers its citizen initiative petition to Elections Alberta's head office in Edmonton today; lawyer Jeffrey Rath says the signatures number "in the hundreds of thousands," well above the 177,732 required (10 percent of votes cast in the last provincial election)
The counting cannot begin today, a Court of King's Bench justice has ruled the signatures are frozen until a legal challenge from several Alberta First Nations is resolved; those First Nations argue that a referendum on independence would violate their constitutional treaty rights
If the petition is ultimately validated and a referendum passes, Albertans would vote on questions potentially including full provincial independence, the biggest political event in this province's history
Whether you signed it or never would in a million years, today is one of those days that ends up in the textbooks. What do you think happens next?
🏒 McDavid Played on a Broken Foot - and He Still Called the Team Average
The more the Oilers talk this week, the more this elimination stings.
Coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed Saturday that both Connor McDavid and forward Jason Dickinson played through foot and ankle fractures during the first round series against Anaheim; McDavid's injury came in Game 2 and clearly affected his speed and production through the final four games of the series
McDavid doubled down on his blunt postgame verdict Saturday: "We were an average team all year", adding that the organization as a whole has "taken a step back" and that it starts with him and Leon Draisaitl
GM Stan Bowman acknowledged his two biggest acquisitions this season, goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Andrew Mangiapane, "did not work out," while pointing to young players Matt Savoie, Josh Samanski and Vasily Podkolzin as reasons to stay optimistic; neither McDavid nor Dickinson is expected to need surgery
A fractured foot and still the best player on the ice most nights. He is not wrong about what needs to change. Drop a 💙🧡 and tell us what this team needs most this summer.

✈️ Spirit Airlines Flew for 34 Years. The Iran War Ended It in a Weekend.
An American budget airline went dark Saturday and some Canadian summer travel plans went with it.
Spirit Airlines announced Saturday it is shutting down operations effective immediately, cancelling all flights and telling passengers not to come to the airport; the airline's restructuring plan assumed jet fuel at $2.24 per gallon but prices hit $4.51 per gallon by end of April, more than double, leaving the carrier unable to find new financing
Canadians who booked directly with Spirit will receive automatic refunds; anyone who booked through a third-party travel site needs to contact their provider directly; Spirit had budget routes that some Canadian travellers used for connections through US hubs
The shutdown adds more pressure to an already strained travel market, Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat have all signalled capacity cuts this season; fewer seats across fewer airlines typically points to higher fares heading into summer
If you have a summer trip planned through any US connection, it is worth a second look at your itinerary this morning. How is your summer travel looking right now?

🛢️Day 65- Iran's Parliament Wants to Change the Strait of Hormuz Forever
While Trump reads Tehran's peace proposal, Iran is quietly moving to make its version of the shutdown permanent.
Iran's parliament is advancing legislation that would bar Israeli vessels from the Strait of Hormuz entirely and require ships from countries it designates as "hostile" to pay war reparations for a transit permit; if passed, this would be a structural change to global shipping, not just a wartime measure that lifts when fighting stops
President Trump says he is still reviewing Iran's 14-point peace proposal, which calls for opening the Strait, ending the US naval blockade and leaving nuclear talks for a later stage; Trump has expressed doubts the proposal goes far enough, and has warned that military strikes could resume if Iran "misbehaves"
Brent crude sits around $108 a barrel as markets wait for either side to move; an Iranian supertanker successfully evaded the US blockade and reached the Asia Pacific carrying roughly 1.9 million barrels of crude valued at approximately $220 million
Sixty-five days in and the question is no longer just how this ends, it is whether Iran is planning for a world where it does not. What is your read on this?

THIS OR THAT 🗳️
Spirit Airlines went dark Saturday. Air Canada has been warning about fare chaos for weeks. Jet fuel has doubled since the Iran war started and summer is right around the corner.
So here is your Monday morning question, Edmonton:
When it comes to summer travel this year...
✈️ Still Going:- You have your trip booked and you are not changing a thing. Higher fares, airline chaos, whatever. You earned this vacation and you are taking it. Nothing is stopping you.
🏡 Staying Close to Home:- The whole travel situation right now is too much of a headache. Alberta has plenty to offer this summer and you are genuinely okay with keeping it local. Staycation done right.
