Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Monday!

Sun and cloud mix through the day with a real risk of scattered thunderstorms, a high near 20C easing to a low near 13C overnight.

Team Canada brought home hockey gold right here at Rogers Place, a Sherwood Park property everyone has been keeping an eye on caught fire overnight, and a northeast Edmonton pantry is quietly helping neighbours get by. We also have a hard look at Edmonton's overdose numbers, a new federal rebate for steelmakers, pipeline pushback from BC First Nations, a powerful earthquake in Colombia and the latest on the Strait of Hormuz standoff. Plus today's This or That waiting for you below. Here is what is making news across Edmonton and the surrounding areas today.

🏒 Team Canada Brings Home Gold Right Here at Rogers Place

What does it look like when Canada dominates on home ice for a world title?

Team Canada's national under 18 squad blew past the United States 8 to 1 in Saturday's Hlinka Gretzky Cup gold medal game at Rogers Place, claiming the program's 26th summer title in front of a hometown crowd.

  • Brock England, Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue each scored twice as Canada outshot the Americans 45 to 17.

  • Finland took bronze, its first medal in the tournament since 2022.

A proud night for Edmonton hockey fans, and a reminder of why this city loves hosting the big games.

🔥 Fire Breaks Out at a Sherwood Park Problem Property

What happens when a house neighbours have complained about for months finally catches fire?

Crews knocked down a fire at a Sherwood Park home overnight Sunday, a property RCMP, the mayor and Alberta Health Services have all been keeping an eye on after dozens of neighbour complaints.

  • No injuries have been reported so far as investigators work to determine the cause.

  • Neighbours say the property has been a source of concern for months.

One to watch as more details come out this week.

🥫 Ruth's Pantry Is Helping Edmonton Families Stretch Their Grocery Budget

What does it take to keep food on the table when the cost of living keeps climbing?

Ruth's Pantry, a program of SOAR Community Empowerment in northeast Edmonton, now serves more than 100 families dealing with the rising cost of groceries, offering a judgment free place to pick up what they need.

  • Director Craig Henkelman says everyone faces hard times and sometimes just needs a hand.

  • The pantry launched last fall and has grown steadily through word of mouth.

A good reminder of the quiet good work happening in our own backyard.

🚨 Edmonton Just Logged Its Worst Year Ever for Overdose Deaths

Why is Edmonton moving in the opposite direction from the rest of the country?

A city memo going to council this week confirms 2025 was Edmonton's worst year on record for overdose deaths, 770 lives lost, even as rates fall in most other Canadian cities.

  • Transit peace officers used naloxone 522 times last year, a 41 percent jump from 2024.

  • Council is now weighing whether to let more city staff, not just peace officers and firefighters, carry it.

A heavy one, but an important one for our community to sit with.

Why are you still overpaying for your phone plan?

🚂 Ottawa Puts Up $100 Million to Help Steelmakers Ship Around Tariffs

Can a freight rebate really soften the blow of a 50 percent tariff?

The federal government unveiled a 100 million dollar rebate today to cover half the freight costs of shipping Canadian made steel by rail or water across the country, aimed at keeping domestic producers afloat as US tariffs bite.

  • Only steel that is Canadian in origin and staying within Canada qualifies.

  • The program runs through next summer or until funding runs out, whichever comes first.

Worth watching if you work anywhere near the steel or manufacturing supply chain.

⛽ BC First Nations Chiefs Push Back on a Pipeline Starting Near Fort Saskatchewan

What happens when a major pipeline plan runs into opposition before it even breaks ground?

First Nations chiefs across British Columbia are calling on Ottawa and Alberta to halt advancement of the proposed West Coast pipeline, a 1,250 kilometre line that would carry crude from Bruderheim, just outside Fort Saskatchewan, to the BC coast.

  • The chiefs say government has not consulted or cooperated with First Nations in good faith.

  • Ottawa is accepting public feedback on a fast track designation for the project until mid September.

A story with roots right in our own backyard, worth keeping an eye on.

🌍 A Powerful Earthquake Shakes Western Colombia

What does it feel like when the ground shifts under 34 million people at once?

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia early this morning, killing at least 20 people and collapsing part of an airport terminal in Pereira, with shaking felt as far away as Ecuador and Venezuela.

  • The US Geological Survey issued an Orange Alert, its second highest warning level for likely widespread damage.

  • Flights were suspended at six regional airports while inspectors check for structural damage.

Our thoughts are with everyone caught in this one this morning.

⚓ Iran Keeps the Strait of Hormuz Closed, For Now

What will it actually take to get the world's busiest oil corridor moving again?

Iran laid out a long list of demands today, including an end to sanctions and a full US naval withdrawal, before it will reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a follow up to the tanker strike we covered in Sunday's issue.

  • Iran's Foreign Ministry says the reopening depends entirely on the US ending its blockade first.

  • The standoff continues to weigh on global oil prices, which touches everyone here at the pumps too.

Still no clear end in sight on this one.
