Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Tuesday!

Storms swing back through today with a real risk of strong thunderstorms this afternoon, a high near 19C easing back to a low near 12C overnight.

A new mural at a northeast care home is putting smiles on residents' faces, plans for a south side rec centre are on hold for now, and Athabasca RCMP are investigating the death of a 12 year old Edmonton boy. We also have Pierre Poilievre's message to the Prime Minister ahead of next week's tariff deadline, a heartbreaking update from the BC wildfires, a rising death toll from yesterday's Colombia earthquake and a heat wave building across Europe. Plus today's Trivia Tuesday waiting for you below. Here is what is making news across Edmonton and the surrounding areas today.

🎨 A Mural That Honours 103 Years of One Woman's Life

What does it take to make a care home feel a little more like home?

A new mural just went up in one unit at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, donated by the family of a 103 year old resident to help brighten the space for her and her neighbours.

  • The mural was donated specifically to honour her long life and add colour to the unit.

  • Staff say small touches like this genuinely change how the space feels for residents and families.

A small addition making a real difference for the people who call it home.

🏊 Budget Crunch Puts South Side Rec Centre on Hold for Years

What happens when a finished plan runs into an unfinished budget?

The long planned Rollie Miles Recreation Centre near 70 Avenue and 105 Street will stay on paper for at least another four years after council would not commit funding this cycle.

  • Design work for the pool, gyms and outdoor rink is already finished.

  • Old Strathcona residents recently held a block party pushing for the project to move forward.

One to watch when the next budget cycle comes around.

🚔 Athabasca RCMP Investigating Death of a 12 Year Old Edmonton Boy

What do we know so far about a case shaking two communities at once?

Athabasca RCMP are investigating a homicide connected to the discovery of human remains earlier this week, identified as a 12 year old Edmonton boy.

  • The investigation is active and RCMP have not released further details.

  • Our thoughts are with everyone who knew him.

We will share more as RCMP confirm it.

🔥 A Tragic Update from the Bald Range Wildfire Near Summerland

What is the human cost when a wildfire moves this fast?

Penticton RCMP confirmed an 80 year old Meadow Valley woman died while trying to flee the Bald Range wildfire near Summerland with a family member Friday night, and the BC Coroner's Service is now investigating.

  • The fire has grown to roughly 13,600 hectares with five evacuation orders and four evacuation alerts in place.

  • Homes and structures have been destroyed as the fire continues to burn aggressively.

Our hearts are with everyone affected by this one.

🇨🇦 Poilievre Tells Carney "No More Caving" Ahead of the Tariff Deadline

What does Alberta stand to lose if trade talks go the wrong way?

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre sent a letter to the Prime Minister urging no further concessions in trade talks with Washington before a new round of 50 percent US tariffs hits most Canadian goods on August 19.

  • The letter names steel, aluminum, softwood lumber and the auto sector as key sticking points.

  • Those industries touch plenty of Alberta jobs directly.

Worth watching as that deadline gets closer.

🌡️ UK and France Brace for Another Heat Wave as Europe Sets New Records

How hot is too hot for a European summer?

Meteo France is warning of temperatures approaching 40C from today onward in southeastern France, part of a wider heat wave settling over western Europe.

  • The UK is also bracing for another round of high temperatures this week.

  • It is the latest in a string of heat records set across Europe this summer.

One more sign of how unusual this summer has been overseas.

🌍 Colombia Earthquake Death Toll Climbs to 111

How much worse can the damage get overnight?

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake in western Colombia we covered in yesterday's issue has now been confirmed at least 111 dead, with hundreds of buildings damaged and search crews still working through the rubble.

  • Rescue workers are searching collapsed buildings including a cathedral in Cali.

  • The death toll is expected to keep climbing as search efforts continue.

Keeping everyone affected in our thoughts this morning.

It has grown into the largest fringe festival on the continent ever since.
