Someone just spent $236,000,000 on a painting. Here’s why it matters for your wallet.

Late last year, a Klimt sold for the highest price ever paid for modern art at auction.

An outlier sure, but it wasn't a fluke. U.S. auction sales grew 23.1% in 2025. The $1-5mm segment even grew 40.8% YoY.

Meanwhile, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slok said to expect ‘zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade.’

Each environment is unique, but after dot-com, post war and contemporary art grew about 24% annually for a decade. After 2008, about 11% for 12 years.

It’s also had near-zero correlation with the S&P 500 since ‘95.*

Now, Masterworks lets you invest in shares of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso.

  • $1.3 billion invested across over 500 artworks.

  • 28 sales to date.

  • Net annualized returns on sold works held 12 months+ like 14.6%, 17.6%, and 17.8%.

Shares can sell quickly, but my subscribers can skip the waitlist:

Happy Thursday, Edmonton and sister towns!

It is a warm one out there today so keep your eyes on the sky this afternoon and maybe have a plan B for the patio. We have a big issue for you, a verdict that made Canadian legal history right here at our law courts, some news northeast residents have been waiting for and a signal out of Washington that the Iran war may finally be winding down. Grab a coffee and let us get into it..💛

Canadian History Was Made at Edmonton Law Courts on Tuesday

Dennis Okeymow, 21, has been found guilty of three counts of manslaughter for selling the rifle that 16-year-old Roman Shewchuk used to kill EPS officers Travis Jordan and Brett Ryan in March 2023, making him the first person in Canadian history convicted of manslaughter in connection with gun trafficking.

  • Justice John Little ruled it was reasonably foreseeable that selling a semi-automatic rifle to a 16-year-old drug user would lead to harm. "There is no moral innocence in the unlawful act," he said.

  • Okeymow was also convicted on charges related to the shooting of pizza delivery driver Richard Albert, who was shot in the head with the same gun just days before the police killings.

This verdict is already being watched across the country as a signal of where the law is headed on gun trafficking accountability. What do you think it should mean for sentencing?

Northeast Edmonton Is About to Get Its Own Costco

The City of Edmonton has approved a development permit for a brand new Costco at Manning Town Centre in the northeast, bringing the warehouse giant to a part of the city that has been waiting a long time for this kind of anchor.

  • The northeast has been one of the fastest growing parts of Edmonton, and Manning Town Centre is a natural fit for a full-size Costco.

Are you in the northeast? Is this the news you have been waiting for?

Your Property Tax Notice Is Hitting Mailboxes Right Now

Edmonton homeowners are receiving their 2026 property tax notices this week, and if yours lands with a thud, that tracks because this year the municipal increase is 6.9 percent on top of a 10.2 percent provincial education tax jump.

  • A typical single-detached home assessed at $492,500 is now paying about $426 a month in combined property taxes.

  • Property taxes are due in full by June 30. The deadline to sign up for monthly installments is June 15.

Canada Just Chose Sweden Over the United States for a Major Defence Purchase

At the CANSEC defence conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, Prime Minister Carney announced Canada is buying a fleet of Saab GlobalEye aerial surveillance aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force, picking a European supplier over two competing American systems from Boeing and L3Harris.

  • The GlobalEye can track objects and signals up to 650 kilometres away and share that information with Canadian Forces and allies in real time.

  • Carney also announced Canada is now targeting four percent of GDP in defence spending by 2030, nearly double the NATO standard of two percent.

Canada is making it clear it is not putting all its eggs in one basket anymore when it comes to defence. What do you make of the shift?

Oil Just Dropped More Than Five Percent and Alberta Is Watching Closely

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that the United States will give Iran peace talks "every chance to succeed," sending oil prices into a sharp drop and pushing Brent crude toward its lowest level since before the Strait of Hormuz conflict began.

  • Brent fell more than five percent, with US crude approaching $89 a barrel, down from recent highs above $110. Every dollar shift in oil directly affects Alberta royalty revenues.

  • Iran's state television claimed Tehran committed to reopen Hormuz to commercial traffic within one month of a deal. The White House called that specific claim a "complete fabrication" but did not deny talks are moving.

If this is the beginning of the end of the Iran war, what does that mean for Alberta's energy sector in your view?
