Hey Edmonton and surrounding areas, happy Thursday! 👋

Today's issue has a lot of weight to it, and some real reasons to feel good too. St. Albert finally has answers in a case that shook the whole region. An Edmonton hospital is sounding a warning that every one of us should pay attention to. And the Oilers are reminding us exactly why playoff season is the best time of year.

Ok, grab your coffee, or tea or a drink and let's get into it. 👇

Your City Has Been Doing Something Quietly Remarkable

One number from city hall this week that deserves more attention than it is getting.

  • Since 2019, Edmonton's $258 million investment in affordable housing has generated $2.6 billion in total economic activity

  • That investment also created more than 10,000 jobs and helped develop or renew over 6,100 homes across the city

  • Every dollar the city invested attracted roughly five more from other governments and housing partners

This is what smart city investment actually looks like. Does this change how you think about where your tax dollars go? Tell us in the comments.

⚕️ April 1 Deadline Has Edmonton ER Doctors Worried, And They Are Speaking Out

A letter has been sent. Now the whole city is watching.

  • Emergency doctors at Grey Nuns Community Hospital have written directly to the provincial health minister warning that a payment deadline on April 1 could leave the ER dangerously short of overnight coverage

  • Hospitalists, the doctors who admit patients from the ER into the hospital through the night, say the end of stipend payments means they cannot commit to overnight shifts without fair compensation

  • The province insists contingency plans are in place, but the doctors say those plans are not adequate and the consequences for patients could be serious

This is not a fight about money. It is a fight about what happens to you or someone you love at 2 in the morning. Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

🏒 The Oilers Punched Through, And Connor McDavid Just Made Hockey History

Tuesday night at Rogers Place was not just a win. It was a moment that belongs in the record books.

  • Connor McDavid scored his 400th career NHL goal and recorded his 1,200th career point in the same game, making him only the third player in hockey history to reach that milestone as fast as he did, behind Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux

  • The Edmonton Oilers beat the Utah Mammoth 5 to 2, moving to a 35, 28, 9 record and climbing into second place in their division heading into the playoff push

  • CTV called the matchup a potential playoff preview, and if Tuesday night is any indication, Oil Country has every reason to feel good right now

We are watching something generational happen in real time, Edmonton. Drop a 🏒 in the comments if you were there or watching from your couch.

Justice for Dr. Mai Diab: Two Men Charged in the Targeted Killing of a St. Albert Pediatric Dentist

A community that has been grieving since February finally got some of the answers it needed today.

  • Alberta RCMP have charged two men in connection with the February 19 death of 59-year-old Dr. Mai Diab, a beloved pediatric dentist whose body was found inside her burning home on Keystone Crescent in St. Albert

  • Police confirmed the killing was entirely targeted and motivated by financial gain; one of the accused and Dr. Diab were known to each other

  • A 44-year-old Edmonton man faces first degree murder charges, and a second suspect from Ontario was arrested in Toronto and transported back to Alberta where he faces charges of indignity to human remains and accessory to murder

Her patients and colleagues remember her as warm, generous and devoted to every child who came through her door. She deserved better. So did her community.

Oil Prices Blinked Today - But the Iran War Is Far From Over

For a few hours on Wednesday, the world took a breath.

  • Oil prices dropped roughly 6 percent as markets responded to early signs of a possible US and Iran ceasefire conversation, with Brent crude falling to around $94 per barrel

  • Stock markets surged in response, with major indexes in London, Paris and Shanghai climbing more than 1 percent and Tokyo's Nikkei jumping nearly 3 percent

  • But the relief is fragile: Iran rejected the US ceasefire proposal, launched fresh attacks on Israel and Kuwait, and officials in Tehran made clear Iran will end this war on its own terms

For Alberta, every dip in oil prices sends a mixed signal. Cheaper at the pump, yes. But this province runs on energy revenue and instability is never comfortable for anyone's bottom line. What do you think comes next?

End Of Life Compassionate Support Doula

Walking the Final Path With You: Meet Deborah Perrin of Life's Final Journey

There are conversations most of us avoid, the ones that happen in hushed hospital rooms, beside a beloved pet's bed, or in the quiet hours after someone we love takes their last breath. Deborah Perrin has spent a lifetime leaning into those conversations. Now, through her newly founded business Life's Final Journey, she's made it her calling to ensure no one faces them alone.

Based in Gunn, Alberta, Deborah is an End of Life Compassionate Support Doula, member of End Of Life Doula Association Of Canada and Alberta Hospice Palliative Care Association. Her credentials span midwifery, healthcare, alternative therapy, and grief recovery, but what shapes her work most isn't found on paper. It's a lifetime of loss.

"My calling is deeply personal," she says, "shaped by sitting beside the dying, whether people or pets, and witnessing the profound healing that comes from being truly heard and present."

Her path wound through veterinary care, funeral services, dementia and palliative healthcare, and grief recovery work. Each role revealed the same gap: people navigating one of life's most profound passages without adequate support. Life's Final Journey was born to fill it.

Deborah's services are as holistic as they are heartfelt, vigil and time-of-death support, legacy work, aftercare, grief recovery, Reiki, and Therapeutic Touch, available by phone, in person, or through a personalized four-week program. She works with individuals, families, and those grieving the loss of an animal companion.

That last piece matters deeply to her. "Losing a beloved animal is not just losing a pet," she says. "It is losing a part of one's soul." In a world that often minimizes pet loss, Deborah stands as a fierce and compassionate advocate for a grief that deserves to be fully honoured.

Still in its early days, Life's Final Journey has already welcomed its first client through word of mouth, a quiet testament to how much this support is needed. Deborah is eyeing a space in Stony Plain as she grows, with a long-term vision of expanding across Alberta.

"I hope to help as many people as I can," she says. "Bringing comfort to the dying, and to the ones left behind."
