What is CareFlow Plumbing, Heating and Restoration in the Greater Edmonton area?
Before Brenden Grace ever ran his own company, he broke someone else's business model simply by caring too much. Working for another plumbing outfit, he kept selling customers on the full, honest scope of what their homes actually needed, and the company started turning those customers away the moment a job got complicated or looked less profitable. That moment stuck with him.
“I believe that just requires a better education and a more upfront, integral conversation that keeps the customer involved regardless of what the price point is,” Brenden says.
So he set out on his own, and CareFlow Plumbing, Heating and Restoration was born, based, in Brenden's own words, in “the Greater Metropolis of Edmonton.”
Ask Brenden what CareFlow actually does and he keeps it plain. “We take the guessing out of emergency situations,” he says. “If the toilet flows over and damages the floor underneath it and the ceiling below it, we're happy to take care of all of the different stages of the problem, starting at the plumbing, since that's what I'm the pro at. I've developed a series of contacts, and now employees, who follow behind me and take care of the rest for us.”
That full scope response is what customers actually call in the middle of a crisis. Brenden points to a common one, a failed sump pump. “A customer will reach out with a failed sump pump, and they've already had part of the conversation with the insurance, but they know the sump has failed and they need one right away. At the same time, they also need repairs. So we can do both.”
Ask him what sets CareFlow apart from other companies doing similar work and he circles right back to that early lesson. “We prefer to educate our customers, and we believe in educating our employees,” he says. “This has led to an increase in profitability and in sustainability.”
CareFlow itself grew the same organic way Brenden describes everything else. “Careflow is an organic creation of the necessity of the moment,” he says. “Over and over again, people have needed services and come to me for assistance, and eventually, with some discussion, I present some options that frequently broadened our current spectrum of work.” Plumbing repairs led naturally into weeping tile work, and weeping tile work led into concrete. Brenden has now run multiple large scale weeping tile installs that combine concrete work, plumbing work and basic labour, all under one roof.
Looking ahead, what excites Brenden most is not a new service or a new truck, it is his team. “The exciting part of the next year is training the technicians to follow in my footsteps, so to speak,” he says. “I've learned sales in a healthy, respectful way to the customer, where it puts the customer first and it is only ever about their options. This has created a natural, organic growth of a company that now has a couple employees, and I get to teach them this stuff, and I get to watch them grow through it and experience it also.”
