Happy Friday, Edmonton!

Welcome to this week's Local Love Spotlight, where every Friday we hand the floor to a local business owner with a story worth telling.

This week, we are heading to Sherwood Park to meet a personal trainer who turned her own return to fitness after having three kids into a mission to help other people get through their own hardest seasons. We think you will be glad you did.

Michaela Viljoen Personal Training | Sherwood Park

What is Michaela Viljoen Personal Training in Sherwood Park, Alberta?

There is a particular kind of person who becomes a personal trainer after having three kids. Michaela Viljoen is that kind of person.

After her third child, Michaela started making her way back into the gym, chasing the version of herself she used to know. Somewhere in that process, the goal changed. It stopped being just about getting her own body back and became about helping other people get through their own version of that fight.

"After I had my third child, I was getting back into the gym, and I decided then that I wanted to help other people be able to get over their challenges," she says.

Based in Sherwood Park, Michaela works with clients who do not always fit the image people have of a personal training studio. Michaela specializes in weight loss, injury recovery, and helping women through perimenopause and menopause, along with clients managing weight changes tied to other diagnoses.

"I help people in perimenopause, menopause, and clients who are just looking to feel better in their bodies," she says.

She knows that stage of life from the inside. Getting back into fitness after having children came with its own emotional weight, and that experience shapes how she shows up for every client now.

"The emotional part of it takes a toll on you," she says, "and having someone there to guide you in what you're doing can really help push you and motivate you to keep going."

That is the difference Michaela tries to build into every program. Not a template. Not a one size fits all plan pulled off a shelf.

"I take the time to get to know them and then create a personalized program for them, finding ways that I can integrate what they like and what will help them in the long run," she says.

Ask Michaela for a story that sums up why she does this work, and she takes a moment before she answers. Then one client comes to mind.

"My one client, she came to me with a knee injury from previous. She has a shoulder injury. She has rheumatoid in her toes," Michaela says. "And recently, she told me that she feels lighter on her feet. She feels better. She feels like she has more energy, and she feels overall better about herself and how things have been going since she started training."

That is the moment a lot of trainers chase and rarely get to hear out loud, a client managing old injuries and a chronic condition telling you she feels lighter. Michaela does not take moments like that lightly.

Looking ahead, she is focused on growth, not for her own sake, but for how many more people she can reach.

"I am looking forward to how much it will grow and how many new people I can help," she says.

What she wants you to know

Ask Michaela what she wants people to know about her, not what she offers but who she is, and the answer comes without hesitation.

"I am a very caring person, and I wear my heart on my sleeve, so anybody who crosses my path, I want them to know how much I care and that I am willing to do anything to help them."

That is Michaela Viljoen Personal Training. If you are in Sherwood Park and looking for someone in your corner, now you know where to find her.
