Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Thursday! 🌦️

Meta just picked Sturgeon County for a 13 billion dollar data centre, 50 Street neighbours got the city to rethink its bike lane plan, and a Canadian crew found Sir Ernest Shackleton's last ship sitting in the Labrador Sea. Expect a mix of sun and showers today with a high near 21C, so keep that umbrella within reach. Grab your coffee and let's get into it ☕

Meta Is Building Its First Canadian Data Centre Right Next Door

What is Meta building in Sturgeon County?

Meta announced it will build its first data centre in Canada, a 13 billion dollar project in Sturgeon County that will be the largest of its kind outside the US.

  • The project brings 3000 construction jobs and about 300 permanent positions once it is running.

  • Meta is also putting 60 million dollars into local infrastructure around the site.

Sturgeon County just became a very big deal in the AI world.

Neighbours Push Back, City Bends on 50 Street Bike Lanes

What changed after Monday's protest?

After dozens of Fulton, Capilano and Goldbar residents protested Monday evening, city council agreed Tuesday to a compromise that keeps about half the on street parking along the route.

  • The original plan removed parking between 102 Avenue and 109A Avenue to make room for new bike lanes.

  • The compromise design costs about 700,000 dollars more than the original plan.

Turns out showing up to a council meeting still works.

Council Approves Taller Towers Next to the Rossdale Burial Grounds

What did council decide about Rossdale?

City council voted 9 to 4 to allow buildings up to 15 storeys in part of Rossdale, despite nearly 20 speakers raising concerns about the site's Indigenous burial grounds and its place on the floodplain.

  • Papaschase First Nation Chief Calvin Bruneau supported the rezoning but urged careful archaeological monitoring.

  • The Edmonton River Valley Conservation Coalition warned the site still sits on a floodplain.

Growth and heritage do not always land on the same side of a vote.

A Century Old Mystery Finally Gets a Look

What did explorers find in the Labrador Sea?

A Canadian expedition led by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society has captured the first ever images of Sir Ernest Shackleton's last ship, sunk in the Labrador Sea since 1962.

  • Two matching portholes below the bridge confirmed the wreck was Quest.

  • The ship now sits home to pink corals, cod and wolf fish 400 metres down.

Some mysteries just wait for the right crew to come looking.

Summer McIntosh Sidelined Days After Breaking a World Record

Why did Summer McIntosh pull out of the trials?

Days after setting a new world record in the 200 butterfly, Canadian swim star Summer McIntosh withdrew from the rest of the Canadian trials with a sore throat and viral symptoms.

  • She is playing it safe ahead of next month's Pan Pacific Championships.

  • Coach Bob Bowman and the national medical team made the call together.

Sometimes the smartest move is knowing when to stop.

Trump Declares the Iran Ceasefire Over

What just happened in the Strait of Hormuz?

Follow up to yesterday's issue. After Iranian strikes on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and new US retaliatory strikes, President Trump said from the NATO summit in Ankara that the ceasefire is over.

  • Oil prices jumped more than 5 percent within hours of the announcement.

  • Iran launched fresh strikes toward US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait in response.

Every time this ceasefire wobbles, it shows up at the pump back home.
