BET YOU DID NOT KNOW
June 21 was not picked randomly for National Indigenous Peoples Day. The date was deliberately chosen to align with the summer solstice, which holds deep spiritual and ceremonial significance for many Indigenous nations across Canada. Many communities had already been gathering and celebrating the solstice for generations before the holiday was officially created in 1996.
Today is not just a government observance. For a lot of Indigenous people it is a continuation of something much older than the holiday itself.
