Good morning, Edmonton, Happy Sunday! 🎉

The sun is out and the skies are clear but Edmonton woke up to some big news this morning. A school bus blew a tire on the Yellowhead Friday evening, Darnell Nurse has formally asked to be traded, and the US and Iran are signing a deal today that could reopen one of the world's most critical shipping lanes. A lot for a Sunday morning coffee.💛

School bus blows a tire on Yellowhead Trail, four students taken to hospital

Forty-nine elementary students and seven adults were on board when their bus from St. Matthew Catholic School blew a tire on Yellowhead Trail Friday evening.

  • All students and staff are confirmed safe. Four children were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons and checked over by EMS.

  • A replacement bus brought the kids back to school after emergency crews cleared the scene.

The driver handled a scary situation well. Glad everyone is okay.

Darnell Nurse has asked the Oilers for a trade

Oilers alternate captain Darnell Nurse has formally told the organization he wants out after spending his entire NHL career in Edmonton.

  • He has a full no-movement clause until July 1, 2027 but gave the team a short list of preferred destinations. The Kings and Penguins are both named as teams he would accept.

  • Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Mark Spector broke the news Friday. Nurse had seven goals and 24 points this past season.

This one is going to sting for a while.

Council walks back stormwater fees for community leagues

Edmonton city council reversed its decision to charge community leagues directly for EPCOR stormwater fees after a wave of pushback from volunteers.

  • Councillor Jon Morgan brought forward the motion to simplify the payment system on June 8. Many leagues were struggling with the charges even after the city provided nearly $1 million in relief.

  • A new plan is due September 25.

Good news for the leagues keeping Edmonton's neighbourhoods connected.

Hop-on, hop-off Edmonton trolley launches Monday

Explore Edmonton is rolling out two new ways to see the city starting this week.

  • The Edmonton Explorer is a trolley-style bus connecting 20 attractions, hotels and entertainment districts beginning June 15. Run by SunDog Tour Co.

  • The Discover Edmonton Pass bundles admission to Fort Edmonton Park, the Muttart Conservatory and TELUS World of Science.

Great timing with a long summer stretch ahead.

PM Carney in Ireland, calling the G7 a turning point

Prime Minister Mark Carney was in Dublin Saturday meeting Irish PM Micheál Martin ahead of the G7 summit in the French Alps.

  • Carney said the world is in "a global rupture, not a quiet transition" and that the G7 will work to build a new world order covering AI, trade and geopolitical conflict.

  • This G7 includes a wider group than usual. Gulf states, Kenya, Brazil, Egypt and India are all joining the table.

Canada is showing up with a message this week.

Mike Babcock expected to be cleared to coach in the NHL again

An NHL insider says there is a strong likelihood Babcock will be allowed to return to coaching once the league wraps up its investigation into his conduct with Columbus.

  • The allegations centred on Babcock asking players to share personal phones during team meetings and displaying private family photos on a screen.

  • The Edmonton angle: Sportsnet reports McDavid and Draisaitl are both reportedly on board about bringing Babcock in as the Oilers' next head coach.

This story is moving fast. Follow-up to Issue 101.

BET YOU DID NOT KNOW 🤔

The Stanley Cup is older than the NHL itself. Lord Frederick Stanley, Canada's Governor General at the time, donated the trophy in 1892. The NHL was not founded until 1917, a full 25 years later. The Cup was already more than two decades old before the league that hands it out every summer even existed.
