The New Trick to Reducing Stress Without Losing Focus

Burnout and stress can make it hard to focus and keep up at work. That pressure builds, creating a cycle that’s tough to break.

If you’re looking for a way to ease workplace stress without feeling drowsy, try CBDistillery’s Daytime Calm gummies.

Each serving contains 50mg of CBG, a non-intoxicating compound derived from hemp, formulated to support calm and daytime focus.

In a 2022 CBDistillery study, CBG was associated with:

  • Increased focus and mental clarity

  • Reduced mild, temporary anxiety

Like all CBDistillery products, Daytime Calm gummies are third-party lab tested for quality and consistency.

Good morning Edmonton, Happy Friday and Happy Issue 100! 🎉

One hundred issues. we had to sit with that for a moment before we started writing this one. When we launched The Urban Brief, we just wanted to make sure you did not have to scroll through five tabs to know what was happening in your backyard. One hundred issues later, here we are, still doing exactly that, together. Thank you for opening this every morning. It means more than you know.

As for today, it is a cool and cloudy Friday out there with a high of 13°C and a 30 percent chance of afternoon showers, so maybe keep a jacket close if you are heading out.💛

Alberta appeals the court ruling that threw out the separation petition

Alberta's government filed its official appeal Thursday in Edmonton court, arguing the judge made 14 errors when she threw out the separatist referendum petition last month.

  • Premier Smith is promising Albertans will vote October 19 on whether to stay in Canada or start the process toward a binding separation vote.

  • The province says the judge was wrong to find that issuing the petition triggered a duty to consult First Nations.

The October 19 date is locked in. Here is where the legal fight stands now.

Spruce Grove's $50M ballpark is four years old and still not open

The Energy City Metro Ballpark has now had three consecutive games postponed over what organizers are calling "facility approvals," and Spruce Grove residents are done being patient.

  • The most recent postponement was June 10, with the new tentative opening date pushed to July 12.

  • Local businesses and fans who planned around this season are frustrated, with no clear explanation of what the approvals process is actually waiting on.

Four years, $50 million and still no first pitch. Here is the full story from the field.

Camrose students walked out after Snapchat messages described assaulting their female classmates

About 100 students at Camrose Composite High School held a walkout Thursday after a group chat containing violent and threatening messages targeting female students was uncovered.

  • The messages date back to fall 2025 and are now being investigated by both the Battle River School Division and RCMP.

  • Students who organized the protest said they wanted their school and community to know this is not something they are willing to stay silent about.

These students decided silence was not an option. Here is what they did about it.

The Gordie Howe Bridge is not opening this week after all

After Prime Minister Carney promised the bridge would open by the end of this week, Canada and the United States agreed Thursday to delay the opening over what officials are calling "outstanding issues."

  • Canada designed, built and paid for the entire $4.7 billion bridge, and Trump's position on the project "has not changed."

  • No new opening date has been confirmed.

Canada built it, Canada paid for it, and Canada is still waiting to cross it.

The CRA is taking up to 47 weeks to process tax return changes, and the watchdog is stepping in

The taxpayers' ombudsperson launched a formal systemic examination Thursday after Canadians filed a high volume of complaints about delays in getting tax adjustments processed.

  • The CRA's own service standard for complex adjustments is 20 weeks. As of May 14, actual wait times are running up to 47 weeks.

  • The watchdog is urging the CRA to fix how these requests are handled and pushing people to file online rather than by mail.

If your adjustment has been sitting for months and you thought it was just you, it is not just you.

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, the US struck back, and then Trump said a deal was done. Iran said it was not.

Thursday was one of the most volatile single days of the Iran conflict yet. The US launched multiple strikes inside Iran, Iran retaliated with ballistic missiles at US bases in Jordan, and Iran formally announced the Strait of Hormuz closed to all marine traffic.

  • An Iranian cargo vessel was sunk and three Indian sailors were killed in the exchange.

  • Trump then announced he was canceling further US strikes and declared a deal "approved." Iran's foreign ministry immediately said no deal has been finalized.

A ceasefire, a deal, no deal and a closed strait all in one day. Here is what we know right now.

STORY CORNER 📖

A reader from St. Albert wrote in about her neighbour Ken, who has lived on their street for 41 years. Every spring he plants a row of sunflowers along the fence line between his yard and the sidewalk. "Not for his yard," she wrote. "For the street. So people walking by have something to look at."

This past week Ken turned 79. When she told him the neighbourhood had noticed the sunflowers, he laughed and said he figured if he had to look at a fence anyway, someone else might as well get something out of it too.

Issue 100 felt like a good day to remember that Edmonton and the communities around it are full of people like Ken. You just have to look up sometimes.
