Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Friday! 🌤️
Alberta just filed the paperwork on a pipeline that starts practically in our backyard, the Oilers said goodbye to a longtime defenceman, and your first grocery benefit payment should be landing right about now. Expect a mix of sun and cloud today with showers possible overnight, so keep the evening plans flexible. Grab your coffee and let’s get into it ☕

🛢️ Alberta Submits Its Bid for a New West Coast Pipeline
What does the new pipeline route mean for our area?
Alberta officially submitted its application for a one million barrel a day pipeline to the coast, and the route starts right in Bruderheim.
Trans Mountain and Pembina Pipeline will lead the build, with a national interest decision targeted for October 1.
Premier Smith and PM Carney stood together in Calgary to make the announcement.
A local start for a project that could shape the next decade.
🏒 Oilers Trade Darnell Nurse After 12 Seasons
Why did the Oilers move on from Darnell Nurse?
Edmonton sent the veteran defenceman to the San Jose Sharks as free agency opened, closing a chapter that included two trips to the Cup Final.
The trade brings back Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zack Sharp and clears his full $9.25 million cap hit.
Nurse was Edmonton's 7th overall pick back in 2013.
End of an era in Oil Country.
🪪 Your Alberta ID Just Got More Crowded
What is actually changing on your driver's licence today?
As of today, new and renewed Alberta licences and ID cards carry your health number and a CAN citizenship marker, a first for any province.
The upgrade comes at no extra cost, whenever you renew.
Adding the health number only happens in person at a registry.
One more reason to update that expired card.
🚑 Ambulance Overhaul Paused for St Albert, Strathcona, Leduc and Spruce Grove
What does the province's pause mean for local ambulance service?
Alberta is holding off on its ambulance contract overhaul for seven municipalities with integrated fire and ambulance service, pushing new pricing out to 2028 or 2029.
Spruce Grove's mayor says ambulance service should stay a provincial responsibility, not a municipal one.
Leduc says it is still working with the province to sort out what the pause means locally.
One less headache for now, more to watch later.

🛒 Your Grocery Cheque Lands Today
How much is the new grocery benefit actually worth?
The first Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit payment arrives today, a 25 percent richer replacement for the old GST HST credit top up.
A single person could see up to $169.75, a couple with two kids up to $339.50.
Payments are based on your 2025 tax return, no application needed.
Check your account today, it might already be there.
⛈️ Ottawa's Canada Day Ended in a Flood, Not Fireworks
How bad did Ottawa's Canada Day storm get?
118mm of rain in a single day washed out Ottawa's fireworks and grounded the Snowbirds on what was meant to be their final Canada Day flyover.
Roads flooded and power went out across the city.
Cleanup is still underway as crews deal with downed trees and washed out streets.
A rough way to end the birthday party.

🕊️ The Iran Talks That Keep Moving Oil Prices
Why does a meeting in Doha matter for Edmonton?
US and Iranian negotiators wrapped another round of talks in Doha this week, with Qatar calling it positive progress on the ceasefire agreement.
Oil slid on the news, with Brent near $70.77 and WTI near $67.67 a barrel.
That price swing flows straight into Alberta's royalty math.
Small meeting, big ripple for the provincial budget.

STORY CORNER 📖
A driver pulled over on the shoulder near a Sherwood Park gas station this week to help a stranger change a flat tire in the rain. He waved off her thanks, said anyone would have done the same, and drove off before she even caught his name.
She posted about it online hoping he might see it. He never did. But hundreds of people did, and for one soggy afternoon this whole region felt like a small town again.
