Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Saturday! ☀️

We have got a bit of morning rain to clear out before the sun takes over today, so grab your coffee and give it a minute. In today's issue, a third night of tornado warnings hits close to home, Treaty 6 Nations pitch a billion dollar vision for Rossdale, and a wildfire tragedy out of Spain is stopping us in our tracks.

A Third Night of Tornado Warnings Hits Close to Home

Was there a tornado warning near Edmonton this week?

Yes, and it was the third night in a row. A tornado warning hit the County of Barrhead near Thunder Lake Friday evening, just 120 km northwest of Edmonton, with the storm tracking east toward our region.

  • It follows Wednesday's Dillberry Lake touchdown that flipped a camper trailer and sent three people to hospital.

  • The Northern Tornadoes Project says Canada has already logged 57 tornadoes this year, the most active start to a season since the 1980s.

If a warning pops up on your phone tonight, do not wait to see the funnel, get inside now.

Treaty 6 Nations Want to Redevelop the Rossdale Lots

What is happening with the Rossdale land in Edmonton?

The Confederacy of Treaty 6, representing 16 nations, just submitted an expression of interest to turn 18 hectares of vacant Rossdale land into what could be Alberta's first major Indigenous led redevelopment.

  • The project could bring 2,500 to 4,000 homes plus commercial space, worth more than 1 billion dollars.

  • It follows this month's rezoning vote on the same land, where council could not speak publicly about Indigenous partnership talks until after the hearing closed.

This is a story worth watching closely in the months ahead.

Eleven Edmonton School Projects Just Got Fast Tracked

Are new schools being built in Edmonton?

Yes, eleven Edmonton school projects just moved from the design stage straight to full construction funding, with three already breaking ground.

  • The projects are part of Alberta's 8.6 billion dollar school construction push.

  • It is welcome news for families in fast growing neighbourhoods still waiting on classroom space.

Check with your local school board if you want to know exactly which schools made the list.

Unemployment Dips as June Jobs Numbers Land

Did the Canadian unemployment rate go up or down in June 2026?

It went down. Statistics Canada reported 18,000 new jobs in June, beating forecasts, and the unemployment rate slipped to 6.5 percent.

  • Youth employment led the gains, with 33,000 new jobs and the youth jobless rate falling to 12.7 percent.

  • Wages grew 3.7 percent year over year, up from 3.2 percent in May.

Good news for anyone job hunting this summer.

Flooding Cancels Canada's National Ukrainian Festival

Why was the Ukrainian festival in Dauphin Manitoba cancelled?

Manitoba flooding forced the cancellation of Canada's National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin, after the local hospital had to evacuate and relocate care to nearby communities.

  • The festival was set for July 31 to August 2, its board made the call given the ongoing infrastructure damage.

  • Ticket holders can use their passes next year or request a refund.

A tough call for organizers, and a rough summer for Manitoba's Parkland region.

A Deadly Wildfire Tears Through Southern Spain

What happened in the Almeria wildfire in Spain?

A wildfire near Los Gallardos in Almeria, Spain has killed at least 12 people and left 23 missing, one of the deadliest fires in the country's history.

  • Most victims died trying to flee on foot or by car, some drowned in a dry riverbed authorities called a death trap.

  • The blaze has burned more than 3,200 hectares and comes amid a brutal European heatwave also fueling fires in France.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected, a heavy reminder of how fast these fires can turn deadly.

Ebola Death Toll in Congo Reaches 600 as Outbreak Spreads

Is Ebola still spreading in Congo?

Yes, the death toll in Congo's latest Ebola outbreak has reached 600, making it Africa's fastest growing Ebola outbreak on record.

  • New suspected cases have surfaced in provinces that had not been touched before, a sign the virus is still spreading beyond its original outbreak zone.

  • Canada has border health measures in place for anyone arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda or South Sudan, including a mandatory quarantine assessment.

If you know anyone travelling to or from that part of the world, keep this one on your radar.

US and Iran Fighting Pauses, But Trump Says the Ceasefire Is Over

Is the US and Iran ceasefire still in effect?

Fighting between the US and Iran appears to have paused for now, even as Trump declared the ceasefire officially over and said talks will continue anyway.

  • It follows the second night of strikes covered in our last issue, when Iran hit back at Gulf allied forces.

  • Tensions remain high across the region, with Jordan intercepting incoming fire and Iran threatening the UAE.

We will keep following this one closely.
