Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Wednesday! ⛈️

Fort McMurray residents patched their own potholes and Alberta finally answered with real money, Sherwood Park seniors are getting a much bigger clubhouse, and Canada just made its biggest defence purchase ever. Expect another round of thunderstorms today with a high near 17C, so keep that umbrella close. Grab your coffee and let's get into it ☕

A Senior Centre Grows in Sherwood Park

What is changing at the Sherwood Park 55+ Club?

Strathcona County council approved a nine to ten million dollar expansion of the Sherwood Park 55+ Club and Log Cabin, giving seniors nearly double the space they have now.

  • Usable space grows from 8220 to 14940 square feet with a new elevator and sprinkler system.

  • The plan adds two building additions and a full basement renovation.

More room for the people who helped build this community in the first place.

Fort Mac Patched Its Own Potholes and Alberta Noticed

What made the province finally act on Highway 63?

About 80 Fort McMurray residents grabbed shovels and patched potholes on Highway 63 themselves last month, and the province just answered with 15 million dollars in repairs.

  • Highway 63 is the only road in and out of Fort McMurray.

  • The funding targets the stretch running straight through town.

Sometimes the loudest protest is just fixing it yourself.

Canada Picks Its New Submarine Fleet

Who is building Canada's new submarines?

Prime Minister Carney named Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as the winning bidder for up to a dozen new submarines, the largest defence purchase in Canadian history.

  • The deal could run past 24 billion dollars, with lifetime costs pushing toward 100 billion.

  • Carney says it will support well over 100000 well paying jobs across the country.

This is the kind of decision that echoes for decades, not years.

The US Strikes Iran After Tankers Are Hit

What happened in the Strait of Hormuz?

Three commercial ships were struck near the Strait of Hormuz, and the US responded by launching new strikes on Iran and reimposing oil sanctions.

  • US crude jumped back above 70 dollars a barrel on the news.

  • The strait carries a massive share of the world's oil shipments.

What happens there rarely stays there, especially for gas prices back home.
