Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Friday! ☀️

K Days opens its gates today for a ten day run, so it is shaping up to be a lively one out there. In this issue, Alberta opens a bike lane complaint line, a grandson shares a tender tribute to the grandparents he lost this week, and we say goodbye to a beloved screen legend.

K Days Opens Today at the Expo Centre

What is happening at K Days this year?

The midway lights up again today as K Days kicks off its ten day run at Edmonton EXPO Centre, running through July 26.

  • The 2026 food lineup includes a donut poutine and plenty of other over the top fair eats.

  • Headline concerts include Mother Mother, Pennywise, The Beaches and more throughout the run.

Come hungry and wear comfortable shoes, this one goes for ten days straight.

Alberta Sets Up a Bike Lane Complaint Line

Why did Alberta launch a bike lane complaint line?

The province opened an online portal for Albertans to flag bike lanes they think are underused, hurting local business or slowing down emergency crews.

  • It comes ahead of legislation this fall that would give the province more power over municipal bike lanes.

  • Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen is now meeting directly with bike lane protesters after the portal launched.

Whichever side of the bike lane debate you land on, this one is worth watching this fall.

Grandson Honours Grandparents Killed in North Edmonton Fire

Who were the victims of the north Edmonton apartment fire?

Lali Toor set up a memorial for his grandparents, Surinderjit Kaur Bhandal, 82, and Major Singh Bhandal, 85, who died when a car crash ruptured a gas line and sparked the explosion and fire at their apartment building this week.

  • The couple moved to Canada from India 30 years ago and lived in the building the entire time.

  • Toor said he wants them remembered for who they were, not just for how they died.

Take a moment today for a couple who called this city home for three decades.

Edmonton Police Lay Hate Motivated Hit and Run Charges

What happened in the Edmonton hate motivated hit and run?

A 37 year old woman is facing charges after police say she deliberately struck a Muslim woman with her vehicle in a north Edmonton parking lot while making racist and xenophobic comments.

  • She is charged with assault with a weapon and criminal hit and run, and turned herself in to police.

  • She is due in court in early August.

A hard story, and a reminder of why charges like these matter.

Carney Says Gordie Howe Bridge Tolls Stay Canadian Until the Debt Is Repaid

Will Canada share Gordie Howe Bridge tolls with the US?

Prime Minister Carney confirmed Canada will not split Gordie Howe Bridge tolls with the US until the 6.4 billion dollars Canada fronted for construction is repaid.

  • The bridge is set to open July 27 after months of delays.

  • Once the debt is repaid, the deal is to split net revenues for 15 years, though early revenue is expected to be modest or even negative as traffic ramps up.

A big number to keep in your back pocket next time the bridge comes up.

WestJet Flight Attendants Vote 99 Percent in Favour of Strike

Could WestJet flight attendants go on strike?

About 4,400 WestJet flight attendants voted 99.4 percent in favour of a strike that could ground Canada's second largest airline as early as August 2.

  • Wages and unpaid ground work are the main sticking points in negotiations.

  • Either side must give 72 hours notice before any job action begins.

Worth keeping an eye on if you have travel plans around the August long weekend.

Sam Neill's Cause of Death Revealed as Pneumonia

How did Jurassic Park star Sam Neill die?

The Jurassic Park and The Piano star's longtime agent confirmed he died of pneumonia, speaking out days after his death to correct what he called inaccurate reporting.

  • Neill had recently celebrated being cancer free after beating non Hodgkin lymphoma through CAR T cell therapy.

  • Tributes have poured in from across the film world for the beloved New Zealand actor.

A tough loss for anyone who grew up loving his films.

STORY CORNER 📖

There is a woman named Carol who has gone to K Days on opening day for thirty one years straight, rain or shine, ever since her late husband proposed to her on the Ferris wheel back in 1995. She still rides it every year, alone now, and says she can feel him next to her for those two minutes at the top. This year her granddaughter is riding along for the first time.

K Days opens today, and somewhere in that midway crowd there is probably a Carol of your own. A ritual, a ride, a memory that keeps coming back around every July.

Got a story like that? Hit reply, we would love to hear it and maybe share it in a future issue.
