Someone just spent $236,000,000 on a painting. Here’s why it matters for your wallet.

Late last year, a Klimt sold for the highest price ever paid for modern art at auction.

An outlier sure, but it wasn't a fluke. U.S. auction sales grew 23.1% in 2025. The $1-5mm segment even grew 40.8% YoY.

Meanwhile, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slok said to expect ‘zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade.’

Each environment is unique, but after dot-com, post war and contemporary art grew about 24% annually for a decade. After 2008, about 11% for 12 years.

It’s also had near-zero correlation with the S&P 500 since ‘95.*

Now, Masterworks lets you invest in shares of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso.

  • $1.3 billion invested across over 500 artworks.

  • 28 sales to date.

  • Net annualized returns on sold works held 12 months+ like 14.6%, 17.6%, and 17.8%.

Shares can sell quickly, but my subscribers can skip the waitlist:

Good morning, Edmonton and all the sister towns!

Sunday arrived with some cloud cover and a bit of thunder waiting in the wings this afternoon, which honestly feels just about right for a week like this one. Alberta's referendum conversation got louder and messier overnight, your Edmonton cops have been quietly saving people's entire life savings from scammers, and if you drive through the southwest, you already know that road situation is no joke. Grab your coffee. Let's get into it.💛

Alberta's Referendum War Just Got a Whole Lot Louder

New voices piled in Saturday from every corner of the country and it is moving fast.

  • Treaty 8 Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi is writing to PM Carney to challenge whether the referendum question complies with federal law.

  • Jason Kenney and Monte Solberg launched "Vote to Stay." Doug Ford called it a play to protect Smith's base. Business groups are warning of an investment chill.

What are your neighbours saying?

Follow-up to Issues 79 and 80.

🕵️ Edmonton Cops Just Saved $45 Million From Scammers Worldwide

EPS has been quietly teaming up with ethical hackers who get inside scam centres in real time since July 2025.

  • Scam baiters share victim details with officers so police can race to intercept money before it is gone. Over 300 victims protected. Total saved: $45 million.

  • An Arizona man was stopped with 8 minutes to spare before handing over his last $20,000. An Ontario grandmother was pulled back from giving away $800,000.

Know a senior who needs to hear this? Send it their way.

Southwest Edmonton Is One Big Traffic Nightmare Right Now

If you drive through Windermere or Terwillegar, you already know exactly what this headline means.

  • More than 200 active city projects are running at the same time. What used to be a 30 minute drive is now routinely two hours for southwest commuters.

  • The City's total infrastructure budget this cycle is $7 billion. There is no quick end in sight.

What is the worst detour you have hit so far this season?

Going for a US Green Card? You Will Have to Leave First

The Trump administration dropped a major rule change Friday that directly affects Albertans with ties south of the border.

  • Most immigrants already in the US, including students, tourists, and temporary workers, can no longer complete their green card application without leaving the country first.

  • Anyone seeking permanent residency through a US citizen sponsor must now return home and apply through an American consulate.

Know someone this affects? Pass this one along.

A Gunman Opened Fire Outside the White House Saturday

For the third time in a single month, there was a shooting near the US president.

  • A 21 year old man fired multiple rounds at a Secret Service checkpoint at 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue. Secret Service returned fire. He died at hospital. One bystander was wounded.

  • President Trump was inside. Officials said the suspect had prior contact with both police and Secret Service and may have had mental health issues.

Three times in one month. What do you make of the security situation in Washington?

BET YOU DID NOT KNOW 🤔

Edmonton is home to arguably the greatest sports dynasty in Canadian history, and most people have never heard of them.

The Edmonton Commercial Grads women's basketball team played from 1915 to 1940 and went 502 wins and just 20 losses. They held the world title for 17 consecutive years and basketball inventor James Naismith himself called them the greatest team he had ever seen. Men's or women's. Any era.

They called Edmonton home. We just forgot to brag about it.

Did you already know about the Grads? Hit reply and tell us where you first heard about them.
