Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas!
Rain moves back in today with a wind warning in effect through the morning, so keep the umbrella by the door for this long weekend Sunday.
The Elks needed extra time to finish off Saturday's storm delayed rematch, Edmonton just became the first city in Canada using a new kidney transplant technology, and the WestJet strike deadline actually arrived overnight. Here is what is making news across Edmonton and the surrounding areas this Sunday.

⚡ Storm Delays the Elks Rematch at Commonwealth
What happened when lightning rolled in?
Saturday's Elks and Roughriders rematch stopped cold at halftime when lightning moved into the area, sending fans out of their seats and into the concourse for 81 minutes.
The teams warmed up again once the storm cleared and finished the game where they left off.
Fans who stuck it out watched the Elks close out the home and home series against Saskatchewan.
Another one for the Edmonton weather file.
🩺 Edmonton First in Canada for New Kidney Transplant Tech
What makes this device different?
University of Alberta Hospital is the first centre in the country using the XVIVO Kidney Assist Transport, a device that keeps donor kidneys oxygenated on the way to surgery.
The technology helps reduce injury to donor kidneys and appears to speed up patient recovery after transplant.
The U of A Hospital transplant team says it is already changing outcomes for patients on the list.
A quiet kind of good news worth passing along.
🕯️ Fifty Years Later, a Beaumont Family Still Wants Answers
What happened to Marie Goudreau?
On the fiftieth anniversary of her unsolved murder, RCMP renewed their public appeal for information on the 1976 death of Beaumont teenager Marie Goudreau, and her family is speaking out about wanting closure.
Marie's car was found abandoned south of Edmonton the night she disappeared, her body discovered two days later north of Devon.
Investigators say every tip over the past five decades has been followed up, and they are hoping someone still has the one that breaks the case.
If you know something, however small it seems, this is the week to say it.

✈️ WestJet Strike Deadline Hits, Flights Grounded
What happens now that the deadline has passed?
The strike and lockout notices ran out at 12:01am Mountain time this morning, and WestJet had already grounded 81 flights by Saturday afternoon as it wound down its network ahead of the deadline.
Passengers booked between July 30 and August 4 can change or cancel their flight without a fee.
WestJet Encore and codeshare flights with partner airlines are not affected by the disruption.
If you have a WestJet flight this week, check your status before you head to the airport.

🌊 Ceuta Border Crisis Death Toll Reaches 67
What led to such a heavy toll?
Spain is installing a floating barrier off the coast of Ceuta after roughly 60,000 people crossed from Morocco into the small Spanish territory over two days, with drownings and a stampede pushing the death toll to 67.
Spain's interior ministry says most of the people who crossed have already returned to Morocco.
Ceuta's president says daily life in the city of 84,000 has been seriously disrupted.
A heavy story, but one worth understanding.
🇯🇵 Kumamoto Quake Survivors Face Water and Heat Crisis
How are survivors coping now?
The death toll from the July earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan has climbed to 36, and more than 9,000 people are still sheltering through a heat wave with water and power still cut in some areas.
Crews are working through more than 100 aftershocks while trying to restore basic services.
Cooling centres have been set up in shelters as temperatures climb during the recovery.
Hoping for some relief for the people still living through this.

BET YOU DID NOT KNOW 🤔
A fact about the airline everyone is talking about today
WestJet started with just three used aircraft and about 220 employees on February 29, 1996, flying to five cities across Western Canada, Edmonton included, right from day one. Three decades later it is one of the two biggest airlines in the country, which makes today's grounded network sting a little more.
What is the last flight you took that got delayed or cancelled? Hit reply and tell me about it, misery loves company.
