Someone just spent $236,000,000 on a painting. Here’s why it matters for your wallet.

Late last year, a Klimt sold for the highest price ever paid for modern art at auction.

An outlier sure, but it wasn't a fluke. U.S. auction sales grew 23.1% in 2025. The $1-5mm segment even grew 40.8% YoY.

Meanwhile, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slok said to expect ‘zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade.’

Each environment is unique, but after dot-com, post war and contemporary art grew about 24% annually for a decade. After 2008, about 11% for 12 years.

It’s also had near-zero correlation with the S&P 500 since ‘95.*

Now, Masterworks lets you invest in shares of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso.

  • $1.3 billion invested across over 500 artworks.

  • 28 sales to date.

  • Net annualized returns on sold works held 12 months+ like 14.6%, 17.6%, and 17.8%.

Shares can sell quickly, but my subscribers can skip the waitlist:

Happy Sunday Edmonton and neighbour towns!

The storm that Issue 87 warned you about showed up right on schedule. Sunday in Edmonton is a full rain day with wind gusts up to 60 km/h, so wherever you are reading this, stay dry. While you settle in with something warm, let us catch you up on a big Friday in Alberta, a Folk Fest lineup worth getting excited about, and a military crossing in Lebanon that has not happened since 2006.💛

Thousands of Albertans Marched on Friday. This Is What They Were Telling the Government.

The Alberta Federation of Labour brought people out in force on May 29, with thousands joining "Fight Back Now" rallies across 20 cities and towns including a march through downtown Edmonton.

  • AFL president Gil McGowan said the UCP is running "an agenda Albertans didn't vote for," with healthcare cuts, education pressures and the separation referendum all drawing people out.

  • Organizers called Friday the start of a longer campaign, not a one-off protest.

If you were downtown and caught the march, today's issue is a good place to share what you saw.

Folk Fest Just Announced Its 2026 Lineup and Edmonton, It Is a Good One

The 48th annual Edmonton Folk Music Festival revealed its full lineup on May 29 with some real names on the bill.

  • Nathaniel Rateliff, Corb Lund, Cat Power, Of Monsters and Men and Arrested Development headline four days at Gallagher Park, August 6 to 9.

  • Tickets go on sale June 6, online only. Indigenous artists Tia Wood, Julian Taylor and Brianna Lizotte are also performing.

Save the date and set a reminder for June 6 before those tickets move.

The Storm Is No Longer Coming. It Is Here.

Environment Canada upgraded to formal rainfall warnings for Alberta on Saturday, and some communities are already dealing with the consequences.

  • Low-lying trails and areas in Lake Louise are already flooded and temporary flood barriers are being deployed in Banff as river levels rise fast.

  • Up to 150mm of rain is possible by Wednesday. Premier Smith says the province is ready but notes flood risk is not at 2013 levels.

Check the basement, move what needs moving, and keep an eye on road conditions before heading out.

Carolina Just Ended Montreal's Run. The Stanley Cup Final Is Vegas vs Carolina Starting June 2.

The last Canadian team standing is out. Carolina beat Montreal 6-1 in Game 5 on Friday night to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

  • The Vegas Golden Knights wait on the other side after winning the Western Conference Finals.

  • Game 1 is June 2. With no Canadian team left, Alberta hockey fans get to pick a villain and a hero.

Drop a comment below: are you riding with Vegas or cheering for Carolina to keep the Cup away from them?

Israeli Forces Just Crossed Into Lebanon Beyond a Line That Has Held Since 2006

For the first time in nearly 20 years, Israeli forces pushed past the Litani River into southern Lebanon on Saturday, reaching the outskirts of Nabatieh, one of the country's largest southern cities.

  • Lebanese military sources confirmed the crossing. Israel appears to be trying to encircle Nabatieh and cut off Hezbollah supply lines from the west. 14 people were killed in strikes on May 29.

  • Hezbollah responded by firing rockets at northern Israel. The last time Israeli ground forces crossed the Litani was during the 2006 war.

This is a significant escalation in a conflict that has been building for months.

Bet You Did Not Know 🤔

Here is your Sunday fact. Take a guess before you scroll.

Edmonton is the northernmost city in North America with a population of over one million people.

That is right. Not Minneapolis. Not Winnipeg. Edmonton sits further north than any other major North American city its size, which makes all those people who moved here from Vancouver even more impressive.

What is one thing about Edmonton that still surprises you even after living here? Drop it in the comments.
