⚽ Edmonton's Own Alphonso Davies Is Hurt Again, And Canada Is Holding Its Breath

He pulled his shirt over his face so nobody could see him cry. And every Canadian who watched it understood exactly why.

The Moment: Alphonso Davies covered his face with his shirt as he left the field with an injury in Bayern Munich's 6-1 win over Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday in Bergamo, Italy, raising questions about the Canadian star's availability for the World Cup.

  • Bayern confirmed the diagnosis on Wednesday evening. Davies strained his hamstring, the same muscle group that has haunted him repeatedly this season

  • Davies was introduced for the start of the second half and lasted less than 30 minutes before being helped from the field in the 71st minute

  • The 25-year-old Canadian star has struggled with injuries and didn't play for Bayern until December this season after tearing an ACL in March 2025

  • Canada is co-hosting the World Cup in June and July with the United States and Mexico, with Canada opening play June 12

  • Bayern has not specified a return timeline, but a similar hamstring injury earlier this season sidelined him for several weeks

Alberta Just Pulled the Rug on Edmonton's Most Vulnerable, With Three Weeks Notice

Boyle Street Community Services got the call last week. April 1 the funding stops. The people who depend on it had no idea.

The Alberta government is ending funding for Boyle Street Community Services' Housing First program effective April 1, giving one of Edmonton's most trusted non-profits barely three weeks to transition clients who finally had a roof over their heads.

  • Social Services Minister Jason Nixon says the funding is being redistributed to a provider that can deliver better results, but Boyle Street only found out last week

  • The government noted Boyle Street was funded to support 200 Albertans but its active caseload was only 54. Boyle Street disputes how those numbers are being framed

  • Cameron Litowski, an Edmontonian who became homeless after fleeing domestic violence, said the news is a devastating blow, the Housing First team helped him rent an apartment for the first time in years

  • Housing First is a proven model that puts people in stable housing before addressing other challenges, removing that support mid-stream can send people straight back to the streets

  • No transition plan for current clients has been publicly announced

Three weeks notice to move some of Edmonton's most vulnerable people. Is that good enough? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Edmonton Surgeries Could Start Getting Cancelled in Weeks. Here Is Why

If you or someone you love is on a surgical waitlist in Edmonton right now, this story is for you.

Edmonton hospitalists are warning that the end of their current funding model on April 1 will trigger immediate and unavoidable surgical cancellations at hospitals across the Edmonton Zone, and the clock is ticking.

  • Hospitalists are the doctors who manage patients inside hospitals, without their funding model renewed, hospitals cannot maintain the capacity needed to keep operating rooms running

  • Surgical cancellations could begin within weeks if a funding resolution is not reached before April 1

  • Alberta Health Services has not publicly confirmed a fix is in place

  • Edmonton already has some of the longest surgical wait times in Alberta following the backlog created during the pandemic years

  • The timing is particularly cruel, just as the province announced new school funding in Budget 2026, it appears to be letting hospital capacity quietly erode

Do you know someone waiting for surgery in Edmonton right now? How long have they been waiting? Share your story in the comments, these numbers need a human face.

Buckle Up Alberta. That Fine Just Got 30% More Expensive

Starting this Friday the province is done being lenient about seatbelts. The fine going up is the reminder nobody wanted.

Alberta's seatbelt fine jumps from $162 to $211 effective Friday March 13, a 30% increase that applies to every driver on every road across the province including every highway, backroad and school zone in surrounding communities.

  • Alberta RCMP issued 2,338 seatbelt and restraint related tickets last year alone

  • Speeding fines are also increasing as part of the same provincial regulation update

  • Parents take note, drivers are legally responsible for ensuring all passengers under 16 are properly restrained. If your kid is not buckled you get the fine

  • The increase applies province wide, whether you are driving through Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Leduc or Fort Saskatchewan

  • No grace period has been announced, the higher fine kicks in immediately on Friday

Honest question, do you always wear your seatbelt or does it depend on how far you are going? And do you think a higher fine actually changes behaviour? Tell us below.

Iran Just Mined the World's Most Important Waterway, And the Planet Is Holding Its Breath

One narrow strait. Twenty percent of the world's oil. And now Iran has started laying mines in it.

As the US-Israel war with Iran entered its 12th day Wednesday, Iran launched what it called its "most intense and heaviest operation" of the conflict while simultaneously mining the Strait of Hormuz, the single most critical energy chokepoint on the planet.

  • Iran fired waves of missiles and drones simultaneously at Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain overnight, the most geographically wide attack of the war so far

  • The US military destroyed 16 Iranian minelayer ships near the Strait of Hormuz but sources confirmed Iran had already begun placing mines in the waterway

  • A cargo vessel is on fire in the strait with its crew evacuating, the first confirmed shipping casualty of the conflict

  • Military experts warn that if even two or three large oil tankers are hit and disabled, parts of the strait could be physically blocked, sending oil prices to levels the world has never seen

  • A suspected Iranian drone also struck a US diplomatic facility near Baghdad airport

  • For Albertans: oil above $120 is already hitting your gas tank. A blocked strait does not just mean higher prices, it means potential shortages and economic disruption that ripples into every grocery store, heating bill and business in the region

Are you following the Iran war closely or is it starting to feel overwhelming? How is it affecting your daily life here in Alberta? Tell us honestly.
