Good morning Edmonton, Happy Easter!!
It is Monday, the Easter long weekend lingers and this week is already moving fast.
Canada had its closest look at the moon in over 50 years this morning. The Pope used Easter Sunday to speak directly to world leaders about war. WestJet is reaching into your wallet as early as Wednesday if you have been sitting on a companion voucher. And our Oilers reminded us that the playoffs are not a lock until they are a lock, even when you are playing at home in front of a full house.
We also have a warning worth passing along to someone in your family before the week gets away from you.
Grab your coffee. Let us get into it. đ

The Oilers' Winning Streak Is Over and the Pacific Race Just Got Interesting
The Oilers five game winning streak came to a hard stop Saturday night at Rogers Place, and the Pacific Division race got a lot tighter overnight.
Carter Hart, back from injury, made 31 saves as the Vegas Golden Knights handed Edmonton a 5 to 1 loss at home. Brett Howden, Jeremy Lauzon, Colton Sissons, Mark Stone and Rasmus Andersson all scored for Vegas, while Jack Eichel added three assists in a dominant performance.
The result tightened the division standings significantly. Vegas is now just one point back of both Edmonton and Anaheim for the top spot, with only a handful of regular season games remaining. The Oilers had climbed to a share of first place as recently as Thursday night.
Evan Bouchard scored the lone goal for Edmonton. Connor Ingram made 28 saves in what was a frustrating night from start to finish for the home side.
The playoffs are already locked in, but where the Oilers land in the standings will shape their entire postseason path. Is the window still wide open, or are you a little nervous heading into this final stretch? đ
Edmonton Police Are Warning About a Phone Scam That Has Been Stealing Bank Cards for a Month
Residents are being warned about a phone scam that has been making its way around Edmonton for the past month, and at least one suspect is now in custody.
Callers posed as bank representatives and told victims their debit cards had been compromised. They then sent a driver to collect the card in an envelope directly from the victim's home. The stolen cards were later used for unauthorized purchases and cash withdrawals.
A 21 year old man has been charged and is set to appear in Edmonton court on April 7. Police say the investigation is ongoing and more suspects are being sought.
Edmonton Police Service is urging residents to be cautious with any unexpected call about their banking. Their advice: never hand your card to anyone who comes to your door, never share your PIN over the phone, and always call your bank back on a number you look up yourself if something feels off.
This one is especially worth sharing with older family members or anyone who might not think twice about a call from their bank. A quick heads up could save someone a lot of grief. đ

WestJet Is Adding a $60 Fuel Surcharge to Companion Vouchers. Wednesday Is Your Deadline.
If you have a WestJet companion voucher sitting in your wallet, Tuesday is your last chance to use it before it costs more.
Starting Wednesday April 8, WestJet is adding a temporary $60 fuel surcharge to all companion voucher bookings. Any booking completed before April 8 is not affected.
The airline has also trimmed its schedule by roughly one per cent in April and three per cent in May, consolidating lower demand routes due to surging jet fuel costs tied to the Iran war.
Air Canada Vacations has already added a $50 per passenger surcharge. More airlines are expected to follow.
Book before Wednesday if you can. The war at the pump is now the war at the ticket counter. đ
Today, for the First Time Since 1972, Humans Are Flying Past the Moon. One of Them Is Canadian.
Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen is making history this afternoon, and you can watch it live.
The Artemis II crew, Hansen and three NASA astronauts, began their six hour lunar flyby at 2:45 PM EDT today, looping around the far side of the moon and breaking the Apollo 13 distance record from 1970.
Hansen is the first Canadian ever to travel to the moon. The crew will photograph the lunar surface, observe a solar eclipse visible only from space, and pass through a 40 minute communications blackout.
They splash down off San Diego on April 10. This mission does not land on the moon but sets the stage for a crewed landing planned for 2028.
NASA and the Canadian Space Agency both have live coverage running today. This one is worth pausing your afternoon for. đ
Canadian Universities Are Stepping Up for Students Who Cannot Reach Their Families in Iran
More than 23,000 Iranian students are studying in Canada right now, and many of them have had no way to confirm whether their families are safe.
Universities including the University of Victoria, Queen's, Carleton and McGill have rolled out exam deferrals, tuition extensions, emergency bursaries and expanded mental health supports for students affected by the war.
The University of Toronto Graduate Students Union president, himself an Iranian PhD student, says the moment calls for more than deadline flexibility. Internet blackouts inside Iran have cut off communication entirely for some students.
McGill has reached out to students from more than a dozen countries in the region, from Iran to Lebanon to Israel and beyond.
If you know a student navigating any of this right now, a simple check in goes a long way. đ

On Easter Sunday, Pope Leo Stepped Onto a Balcony and Asked the World to Choose Peace
With war raging across the Middle East, Pope Leo XIV used his first Easter message to deliver the most direct call for peace of his papacy so far.
Speaking to tens of thousands in St. Peter's Square, the Chicago born pope warned the world is growing "accustomed to violence" and indifferent to the deaths of thousands. He quoted Pope Francis directly, saying humanity shows "a great thirst for death."
"Let those who have weapons lay them down," he said. "Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace. Not a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue." He had already urged Trump earlier in the week to find an off ramp to the Iran war.
He announced a global prayer vigil for peace at St. Peter's Square on April 11.
Whatever your faith, this one was worth hearing. đ

đ¸ SPOTTED IN EDMONTON
Spring is officially here on the calendar. Edmonton, however, has its own timeline.
We want to see what you have been noticing out there this week. The good stuff, the funny stuff, the only in Edmonton moments that made you stop and pull out your phone. A snow pile still holding on in your front yard. Someone brave enough to be in shorts at the bus stop. A dog in a full winter jacket on April 6th. Your garden refusing to wake up no matter how many times you check.
Drop your photo or describe what you spotted in the comments below and let us see the city through your eyes. The best ones might make it into next week's issue. đ¸
