Good morning Edmonton, Happy Monday Neighbour!!

Good morning, Edmonton, and yes, that is indeed snow outside. In between the flurries, today's issue has some genuinely good news at the pump, a big move to speed up Alberta's energy projects and a welcome update on one of the Oilers' most important players. Let's get into it.💛

⛽ Your Gas Bill Gets Lighter Next Monday. But Alberta Isn't Joining In Yet.

Starting April 20, Canadians will get a break at the pump. Albertans will only get half the picture, at least for now.

  • Prime Minister Carney announced Tuesday that the federal fuel excise tax is being suspended from April 20 to Labour Day, saving 10 cents per litre on gas and 4 cents on diesel

  • Alberta Finance Minister Nate Horner says the province is sticking to its existing formula. The provincial 13 cent levy only disappears automatically if WTI oil stays at or above $90 a barrel through portions of May and June

  • NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi has been pushing Premier Smith to act now. Smith pointed to her government's income tax cuts instead, saying they already save a two income family five times more per year than any gas tax cut would

So starting Monday, some relief. Just not the full picture. Will it be enough for you?

⚡ Alberta Wants Major Energy Projects Approved in 120 Days

The province introduced Bill 30 on Tuesday and if it passes, Alberta's energy sector could move a whole lot faster.

  • Projects worth $250 million or more that align with provincial priorities and have completed environmental assessments would face a firm 120 day approval deadline

  • Energy Minister Brian Jean said too many projects get stuck on technicalities for years. He noted the U.S. gets similar approvals done in a month

  • Critics say the timeline is aggressive and risks cutting corners on Indigenous consultation. The NDP called it a shortcut rather than rolling up your sleeves and doing the hard work properly

Alberta wants to double oil and gas production by 2035. Does 120 days sound like enough time to get it right?

🏒 Draisaitl Is Back on the Ice and Feeling Fine

Good news for every Oilers fan heading into playoff season.

  • Leon Draisaitl told reporters Tuesday that he is skating again and feels fine as he progresses toward a return from injury

  • The Oilers need him healthy. He is one of the most dangerous offensive players in the NHL and a massive piece of any deep playoff run

  • No return date has been confirmed yet but the progress is real and the timing could not be better

Are you confident the Oilers can go on a deep run this spring? Drop your take below.

❄️ Yes, That Is Snow. And More Is On the Way Today.

Mid April and Alberta is doing Alberta things.

  • Environment Canada has snowfall warnings in effect for communities along the eastern slopes including Grande Cache, Hinton and the MD of Greenview, with up to 35 cm expected through Wednesday evening in some spots

  • Edmonton itself is in the risk zone today for 10 to 15 cm, with the heaviest impacts expected through the Rockies and foothills

  • Daytime highs are just warm enough that most of what falls in the city should melt fairly quickly, but allow extra time if you are heading toward the mountains today

How is spring treating your neighbourhood this morning?

🛢️ Oil Eases as the US and Iran Signal More Talks Are Coming

After Monday's surge past $103 a barrel, oil pulled back Tuesday as fresh signals emerged that the U.S. and Iran are working toward a new round of peace talks before the April 22 ceasefire deadline.

  • Both the TSX and U.S. markets rose Tuesday on the hopeful signs, with oil settling into the low to mid $90s

  • Officials from both countries are reportedly discussing a return to Islamabad for negotiations, though no date has been confirmed yet

  • The ceasefire technically expires April 22 and both sides have already accused each other of violations, so the window is tight

Every dollar oil drops matters for what Albertans pay at the pump, and right now every piece of good news counts.

🌤️ Edmonton Weather - Wednesday April 15th

Wednesday is a cool 4°C with snow in the forecast. Not a lot for the city itself, but keep an eye on road conditions if you are heading west or into the foothills today. Travel there will be challenging.
