Happy Thursday, Edmonton!!

There is a lot happening today and it is all genuinely worth your attention. From a gas station warning in the south end to big news on affordable housing, a community in Sturgeon County fighting for its future and a national debate that every parent is already talking about. Let's get into it.💛

⛽ Warning: If You Filled Up at the Ellerslie Road Circle K This Week, Read This

Multiple Edmonton drivers had their vehicles die after stopping for gas at the Esso Circle K at Ellerslie Road and Summerside Drive in south Edmonton.

  • Several cars stopped running within minutes of leaving the pump, with drivers reporting what they believe was water mixed into the fuel

  • Global News spoke to four affected owners on Wednesday and received messages from more. A south Edmonton mechanic had five vehicles from that same station arrive in a single afternoon

  • Couche Tard, which owns Circle K, says it is aware of customer concerns and investigating. The pumps were shut down Wednesday afternoon with a fuel maintenance crew on site. The station manager told Global News off camera that their monitoring had not triggered any alarms

If you filled up there recently and notice rough running, reduced power or your engine cutting out, get it looked at. Affected customers can contact Circle K customer service directly.

🏠 Edmonton Council Says Yes to Affordable Housing on Two North End School Sites

Families in north Edmonton could soon have more housing options after city council voted Wednesday to sell two surplus school sites for affordable development.

  • The sites are in the Dunluce and Sifton Park communities and will be redeveloped into affordable housing units as part of the city's ongoing program to repurpose land no longer needed by school boards

  • Ward Anirniq councillor Erin Rutherford, who represents Dunluce, voted against the plan. She argued her community already carries a disproportionate share of affordable units and hoped to see the land used differently

  • The city has been converting surplus school sites for nearly two decades to address Edmonton's growing housing needs

Is your neighbourhood the right place for more affordable housing, or should the city spread the responsibility more evenly?

🏚️ Gibbons May Lose Its Town Status. Here Is What Happened.

A small town in Sturgeon County is in a fight for its very survival after new councillors discovered a $15.3 million debt left by the previous administration.

  • The Town of Gibbons, home to about 3,300 people, has laid off five staff members, eliminated vacant positions and cut services including arena hours and road maintenance to try to stabilize its finances

  • A provincial viability review is already underway. Under the newly passed Bill 28, the minister has final say on whether Gibbons keeps its town status or becomes a hamlet under Sturgeon County, regardless of how residents vote

  • Mayor Rick Henderson says the previous administration left the town living paycheque to paycheque with all reserves depleted, pointing to decisions like a $2.4 million traffic light and a shopping district that was never connected to the sewage system

Residents will vote in June. But the final call belongs to the province. Do you think small towns like Gibbons deserve more provincial support?

📱 Ottawa Is Very Seriously Considering Banning Kids Under 16 From Social Media

The Carney government is signalling it may move forward with one of the most talked about policy ideas in the country right now.

  • Culture Minister Marc Miller told reporters Wednesday the government is very seriously considering introducing a law that would set 16 as the minimum age for social media access, after Liberal convention delegates passed a non-binding resolution backing the idea last weekend

  • Miller says a ban could be an important tool but warns it is not the answer to everything. Online harms do not disappear the moment someone turns 16

  • Three quarters of Canadians support a full ban for those under 16 according to recent polling. Australia already passed such a law last December, and at least a dozen European countries are moving in the same direction

Every parent in Edmonton and surrounding areas has thought about this. Would a social media ban for kids under 16 actually make a difference?

🛢️ Oil Eases and Markets Rise as US and Iran Inch Toward New Talks

A cautious wave of optimism pushed stock markets higher Tuesday as diplomats worked behind the scenes to arrange another round of peace talks before the fragile ceasefire expires April 22.

  • Brent crude fell to about $94.79 a barrel on Tuesday, well below the $119 peak reached at the height of the conflict, though still significantly above pre-war levels around $70

  • Canadian markets climbed with the TSX closing 223 points higher. U.S. stocks came within a fraction of a record high

  • The IMF warned this week that the war has accelerated global inflation to a projected 4.4 percent this year, up from earlier forecasts. Every dollar oil drops helps Albertans at the pump and every business that runs on fuel

The ceasefire window closes April 22. What happens next matters enormously for what you pay at the gas station between now and Labour Day.

🤔 BET YOU DID NOT KNOW

Edmonton is home to one of the most remarkable records in North American sports history that most people have never heard of.

The Edmonton Grads women's basketball team won 502 of 522 games they played between 1915 and 1940. They competed in four Olympic Games, winning the gold medal exhibition tournament every single time. Basketball's inventor, James Naismith, called them the greatest basketball team that ever played, men or women.

Not bad for a team that started as a group of high school girls from McDougall Commercial High School.

Did you already know this? And how many Edmonton sports records can you name without looking them up? Drop your answer below! 🏀
