Happy Tuesday Edmonton!!

There is a lot to unpack today, a teen charged after a school stabbing, a federal government that woke up with a majority and a piece of Alberta healthcare legislation that is going to have people talking. Let's get into it.💛

🔪 Teen Charged After Jasper Place High School Stabbing

A 16-year-old has been charged after a stabbing put Jasper Place High School into lockdown last Friday and sent a fellow student to hospital in life-threatening condition.

  • The suspect confronted another 16-year-old over an earlier argument, stabbed him and fled, students tried to hold him back but he broke free before police caught him nearby

  • The victim has since been released from hospital and is recovering at home

  • The 16-year-old faces charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and criminal harassment, he cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Classes have resumed and the school board's critical incident support team is on site.

🏥 Alberta Just Introduced Private Medical Testing, No Doctor Required

Bill 29 landed Monday and it is one of the bigger shifts in Alberta healthcare in years.

  • The legislation would let Albertans pay out of pocket for diagnostic tests like MRIs, CT scans and bloodwork without a doctor's referral

  • Health Minister Adriana LaGrange says it adds capacity and gives patients more control, critics are calling it "legislated queue jumping"

  • Specific tests, pricing and reimbursement details will come through regulations in the months ahead

Love it or hate it, this one is going to be debated at every kitchen table in the province.

🚗 Edmonton's AutoCanada Is Pulling Out of the U.S., and Bringing the Money Home

The Edmonton-headquartered dealership giant announced Monday it has sold its Hyundai dealership in Lincolnwood, Illinois as part of its full exit from the American market.

  • AutoCanada received $3.3 million for the sale and is directing the proceeds toward paying down debt

  • Since declaring its U.S. operations discontinued at the end of 2024, the company has now recovered about $65.8 million from U.S. asset sales

  • Total expected proceeds are on track to land at the upper end of their $115 to $130 million target, with 10 U.S. dealerships still to go

An Edmonton company betting on Canada. Not a bad look right now.

Your Property Tax Bill Just Got More Real, Council Meets This Week

Edmonton city council is diving into the numbers this week and the forecast is not light reading.

  • The four main drivers of tax increases are rising service costs, population growth, slower non-tax revenue and new capital project operating costs

  • If no changes are made, the city is forecasting tax levy increases of 5.6% in 2027, followed by smaller increases through 2030

  • Council also votes this week on $15 million to kick off the River Crossing development near Re/Max Field

What would you cut, or what would you pay more for, to keep Edmonton moving?

🗳️ Canada Has a New Political Reality This Morning

It is official. Mark Carney's Liberals swept all three byelections Monday night and woke up as a majority government for the first time since last April's election.

  • Wins in University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest in Toronto locked in the majority, Terrebonne in Quebec was the bonus, making it a clean sweep to 174 seats

  • It is the first time in Canadian history that a government has flipped from minority to majority between elections

  • For Alberta: Carney can now pass legislation without negotiating with any other party, including on energy policy, pipelines and the economy

Pierre Poilievre called it a majority won through "backroom deals." Carney called it a mandate to get to work. What do you think it means for Alberta?

⛽ Oil Is Still Hovering Near $100, and Talks May Be Resuming

After Monday's surge above $103 a barrel when the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports kicked in, oil pulled back slightly by end of day as word emerged that both sides may be willing to resume peace talks before the ceasefire expires April 22.

  • Brent crude settled around $99 Monday, still up more than 40% since the Iran war began in late February

  • The blockade is targeting ships entering or leaving Iranian ports, not general traffic through the Strait of Hormuz

  • Energy experts warn prices could stay elevated well into late 2026 even if a deal is eventually reached, the infrastructure damage alone will take months to repair
