Good morning, Neighbour, happy Sunday!! ☀️

The Oilers are playoff bound. A women's shelter in northeast Edmonton quietly closed its doors and nearly 100 women lost a safe place to land. Our mayor is in Asia pitching this city to the world. An Alberta teen is heading to NASA. The Islamabad peace talks collapsed after 21 hours with no deal. And federal byelection results could hand Mark Carney a majority by tonight. It is a lot for a Sunday morning.

Pour a big one. Let us get into it. 💛

🏒 The Oilers Lost Last Night. They Also Clinched a Playoff Spot.

Saturday in Los Angeles was a tale of two stories for Edmonton fans.

  • Anton Forsberg made 27 saves and shut out the Oilers 1-0 at Crypto.com Arena, handing Edmonton their fourth shutout of the season. Artemi Panarin scored the only goal on a first period breakaway. McDavid was held off the scoresheet and picked up two minor penalties, including a costly holding call late in the third.

  • The loss stung, but later that night the Winnipeg Jets dropped a 7-1 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers, sealing Edmonton's playoff berth mathematically. The Oilers are in regardless of how the final two regular season games play out.

  • Edmonton sits at 40-30-10, one point behind Vegas in the Pacific Division with two games left. The Oilers host Colorado on Monday in their second last regular season game.

The result in LA is not the story. The playoff spot is. See you in the postseason, Edmonton. 🏒💛

🏠 Edmonton Just Lost 100 Shelter Spaces for Vulnerable Women

The Elizabeth Fry Society's women's shelter on Fort Road near the Belvedere LRT Station has closed after the City of Edmonton refused to extend the lease a second time.

  • The shelter opened in 2024 and has supported more than 3,400 women since then. The original lease expired November 30, 2025, but the city extended it through March 31 to ensure coverage through winter. The Elizabeth Fry Society requested a further extension to July 31 while searching for a permanent location, the city said no.

  • The closure means Edmonton has lost approximately 100 shelter spaces for women, at a time when demand for emergency housing continues to grow across the city.

  • A city spokesperson acknowledged the shelter's importance but said the land was never intended for long-term use. The Elizabeth Fry Society did not respond to media requests for comment.

One hundred spaces. Gone. If you or someone you know needs emergency shelter support, call 211. 💛

🌏 Mayor Knack Is Pitching Edmonton to Asia, and the Numbers Are Big

While most of us were watching hockey Saturday night, Edmonton's mayor was halfway around the world making the case for this city.

  • Mayor Andrew Knack and Edmonton Global are on a trade mission to Japan and China, promoting the capital region for investment in advanced manufacturing, technology and sustainable energy. Edmonton Global CEO Daryn Edgar told CTV the conversations could translate into up to $2 billion in capital investment and 300 to 400 permanent jobs for the region.

  • The mission reflects a broader push to diversify Edmonton's economic relationships and attract high-value industries as the city grows. National Bank of Canada, which recently made Edmonton its Western Canada regional headquarters following its acquisition of Canadian Western Bank, is also deepening its presence here.

  • It is the kind of quiet, long-game work that does not make headlines every day but shapes what this city looks like a decade from now.

Two billion dollars and hundreds of permanent jobs. Not bad for a week's work, Mayor Knack. 💛

🚀 An Alberta Teen Is Canada's Only Pick for NASA's International Space School

The Artemis II mission just wrapped. Now meet the teenager who could be part of what comes next.

  • Sixteen-year-old Thomas Toombes has been chosen as the 2026 Western Canada delegate to the International Space School at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston this summer. He is Canada's only representative at the program this year.

  • Thomas will join about 50 students from 25 countries for two weeks in late July, working together to design a simulated human mission to Mars. Participants work alongside astronauts, engineers and industry mentors for hands-on experience in human spaceflight.

  • He described himself as excited and a little nervous. That sounds about right for someone about to help design a mission to Mars. 🚀

After a week of watching Jeremy Hansen circle the moon, this is a lovely reminder that the next generation of Canadian space explorers is already on the launchpad. 💛

🍁 Carney's Liberals Head Into Byelection Day With a Majority in Sight

Three federal seats are up for grabs today and the Liberals are coming in riding historic momentum.

  • Two Toronto area byelections are considered safe Liberal wins. The real contest is in Terrebonne, Quebec, where the Liberals are pushing hard against the Bloc Québécois in a riding conspicuously close to where the party convention was held this weekend.

  • The Liberals already sit on the verge of a majority after a string of floor crossings including Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu this week. They need just two more seats to hit 173 in the 343 seat House of Commons. Even one Toronto win today would effectively seal it.

  • PM Carney speaks to convention delegates in Montreal this afternoon before results come in tonight. The party is riding 45% national support, their strongest numbers in nearly half a century.

For Edmonton and Alberta, a Liberal majority means a very different political landscape heading into the fall sitting of Parliament. Results tonight. 👇

🕊️ 21 Hours in Islamabad. No Deal. Vance Has Left.

The most anticipated diplomatic meeting in decades ended without an agreement early Sunday morning.

  • US Vice President JD Vance confirmed the talks broke down after 21 hours of negotiations. The central sticking point: Iran refused to give a firm commitment that it would not pursue nuclear weapons. "The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement," Vance said at a press conference before boarding Air Force Two. "I think that is bad news for Iran much more than it is bad news for the United States."

  • Iran's state media cited what it called excessive US demands as the reason for the collapse, including demands around the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear materials. Vance said the US left a "final and best offer" on the table and would wait to see if Iran responds.

  • The two-week ceasefire remains technically in place but its future is now deeply uncertain. Two US Navy destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday — the first American warships through since the war began — as part of a mine-clearing operation. Pakistan's Foreign Minister urged both sides to hold the ceasefire and called the 21-hour session "intense and constructive."

For Edmonton families watching fuel prices and grocery bills, what happens next in that strait matters. Watch this one closely. 👇

🌤️ Edmonton Weather - Sunday 12th

Sunday is keeping things real with a high of just 1°C under heavy cloud cover, a far cry from Friday's 13°C sunshine that had everyone convinced spring had arrived for good. Tonight drops to minus 4°C and stays cloudy, so the heavy jacket is earning its keep this weekend. 🧥

🤔 BET YOU DID NOT KNOW

Edmonton is home to one of the greatest sports dynasties in history, and most people outside Alberta have never heard of them.

The Edmonton Grads were a women's basketball team that played from 1915 to 1940. In that time they won 502 of their 522 games, a winning percentage of 96.2%. They dominated four Olympic Games, winning gold every single time they competed. When the founder of basketball himself, James Naismith, was asked to name the greatest basketball team in the world, he did not hesitate. He named the Edmonton Grads.

They were never given a professional league to compete in. They never had a major arena deal. They just kept winning for 25 years, out of Edmonton, Alberta.

Not bad for a city that also just clinched another NHL playoff berth last night. 🏀💛

Drop a 🏀 in the comments if you already knew about the Grads, and tell us if you think they deserve more recognition! 👇
