Good morning and happy Easter weekend, Edmonton!

Six degrees today, a little grey, and a lot going on in the world. From a Swan Hills pharmacy closing its doors to an American jet shot down over Iran, Saturday is not short on news. The good news, a BC mum and her little girl are finally home. Let us start there. 💛

Alberta Tables Bill to Keep Graphic Sexual Content Away From Kids in Public Libraries

The UCP government introduced new legislation Thursday that would restrict children 15 and under from accessing sexually explicit material in public libraries across Alberta.

  • Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams says the bill does not ban books, it requires graphic sexual material to be placed behind a counter or in areas children cannot access on their own

  • The Coalition of Alberta Public Libraries, representing 324 library locations serving 99 per cent of Albertans, says it was never consulted and is calling the bill an act of censorship

  • NDP leader Naheed Nenshi mocked the legislation, asking what a team of "library inspectors" would even look like, the UCP says families deserve to feel safe walking into a public library

This one is going to spark some conversation. Where do you land? 👇

💊 Swan Hills Is Losing Its Only Pharmacy, And the Community Is Scrambling

A small Alberta town 200 kilometres north of Edmonton is about to lose something it cannot easily replace.

  • The Rexall Pharmacy in Swan Hills, the only one in the community, will permanently close April 30, leaving roughly 1,400 residents without a local place to fill prescriptions or pick up essential items

  • The closure means residents will need to travel significant distances for medications, raising real concerns about access for seniors and those without reliable transportation

  • No replacement pharmacy has been announced

Rural healthcare access is already stretched thin across Alberta. This is another painful reminder of that reality.

🏠 Alberta Is Drawing a Line With Ottawa Over Housing Money, And Red Deer Is the Flashpoint

Alberta's housing minister has a message for the federal government, treat our communities fairly or we stop signing deals.

  • Ottawa cancelled a $12 million Housing Accelerator Fund agreement with Red Deer after the city refused to implement blanket zoning changes, then offered to redirect the money to Edmonton and Airdrie instead

  • Housing Minister Jason Nixon says the province signed off on that redirection as a one time move, but will not approve any future federal housing agreements until Red Deer and other mid sized Alberta communities are treated the same as cities in other provinces

  • NDP leader Nenshi called it reckless, saying Alberta is "turning away free money" while running a massive deficit and failing to keep up with population growth

Another round in the ongoing Alberta versus Ottawa fight, and this time it is housing on the line.

BC Mother and Seven Year Old Daughter Home After Three Weeks in ICE Detention

After three weeks detained in a Texas immigration facility, Tania Warner and her seven year old daughter Ayla are finally home.

  • Warner, originally from Penticton BC, was detained with her daughter at a US border checkpoint on March 14 while returning from a baby shower, she was in the process of obtaining a green card and her husband says her paperwork was up to date

  • A bond of US$9,500 was set by a judge and the pair were released Thursday after public pressure and diplomatic efforts accelerated the process, Warner still has to wear an ankle bracelet

  • BC MLA Amelia Boultbee, who championed their release, said "I am proud to be Canadian and proud to live in a community where we stand up for each other"

They get to sleep in their own beds tonight. Just in time for Easter. 💛

Iran Shoots Down a US Fighter Jet, 48 Hours After Trump Said Iran Was "Decimated"

The Iran war took a stunning and dangerous turn Friday.

  • Less than 48 hours after Trump told Americans the US military had "beaten and completely decimated Iran" and that Iran had "no anti aircraft equipment," Iranian forces shot down a US F-15E fighter jet over Iranian territory, the first American aircraft downed in the conflict

  • One crew member was rescued during a frantic search and rescue operation but the second remains missing, Iran's state media urged civilians to find and hand over the American airman, while Iranian forces also hit two Blackhawk helicopters and an A-10 Warthog during the rescue effort

  • Trump told reporters "No, not at all. No, it is war. We are in war" when asked if the downing would affect negotiations with Iran

The gap between what Trump is saying and what is happening on the ground just got a lot harder to ignore.

🛒 The Iran War, Your Grocery Bill and the Farmers Already Paying the Price

The war in the Middle East is not just about oil prices. It is about to hit your grocery cart too.

  • A third of global fertilizer trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively closed, fertilizer prices have jumped sharply right as North American farmers head into spring planting season, threatening yields and pushing up food costs for everyone

  • The UN Food Price Index rose 2.4 per cent in March alone driven by the war, with the UN World Food Programme warning that up to 45 million more people globally could face food insecurity if oil stays above $100 a barrel

  • Canadian grocers are already sounding the alarm, with one Vancouver store owner saying it is "death by a thousand cuts" meat, dairy, produce and imported goods are all expected to climb in the weeks ahead

You will feel this one at the checkout. The question is how much and how soon.
