Crash Expert: “This Looks Like 1929” → 71,105 Diversifying Here
Mark Spitznagel, who made $1B in a single day during the 2015 flash crash, warned markets are mimicking 1929. Seems extreme but we did just see the worst quarter for the S&P since 2022.
So it’s not so surprising that Vanguard and Goldman Sachs forecasted 5% and 3% annual S&P returns respectively for 2024-2034.
Late last year, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slok put it this way: "expect zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade."
Almost no one knows this, but postwar and contemporary art appreciated 10.2% annually with near-zero correlation to equities from 1995–2025 overall.*
And sure… billionaires like Bezos can make headlines at auction, but what about the rest of us?

Good morning, Edmonton!
It is a mild Thursday and this issue has a lot to sit with today. Two of this city's most iconic bridges are officially on their way out, a First Nation in northern Alberta took a heartbreaking step toward the truth, and south of the border some Republican senators just broke ranks on a war that has been costing Alberta families at the pump since February. Let us get into it together.💛

Two of Edmonton's Most Iconic Bridges Are on Their Way Out
Edmonton's High Level Bridge and Low Level Bridge are both headed for replacement, and a city report presented to council on May 19 says the clock is now officially ticking.
Updated testing shows keeping the High Level Bridge operational for another 75 years would cost over $1 billion. Replacing it makes more financial sense than preserving it.
The Low Level Bridge gets replaced first. Design work begins in 2027 with construction done by 2030. High Level Bridge planning starts between 2031 and 2034, with construction from 2035 to 2039.
The High Level Bridge holds a Municipal Historic Resource heritage designation, meaning council must formally repeal that status before any demolition can move forward. That is a fight still ahead.
The High Level Bridge has been standing since 1913. What is your first memory of crossing it?
A Northern Alberta First Nation Is Still Searching for 202 Children Who Never Came Home
The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation in northwestern Alberta announced Tuesday it has identified 62 potential unmarked grave sites after a two-year search of its reserve, and the numbers behind those sites are hard to read.
Nation researchers confirmed 82 death records of school-aged children between 7 and 16 at St. Francis Xavier Residential School, which operated on the reserve from 1907 to 1961. A total of 202 children between ages 1 and 18 died during that period.
The University of Alberta used ground-penetrating radar, drone imagery, soil spectroscopy and search dogs in the work. None of the 62 potential sites have been confirmed as containing human remains yet.
The nation is calling on Ottawa and the Catholic Diocese to release more records and is applying for continued federal funding. The chief said it plainly: they are still fighting for their kids.
What would you want the government to do next for this community?
The Verdict in Kache's Case Is Coming Friday
The Crystal MacDonald dog attack trial wrapped up closing arguments on Tuesday, and the city has been holding its breath.
Crown counsel told the court the death of 11-year-old Kache Grist was "foreseeable" and that MacDonald failed to protect others from her two Cane Corsos despite a documented history of aggression spanning nine months before the fatal attack in Summerside in April 2024.
The defence argued MacDonald was taking steps to train the dogs and did not believe they posed a lethal threat. More than a dozen witnesses testified over the course of the trial.
The judge reserved the decision Tuesday and is expected to rule this Friday, May 23. MacDonald faces one count of criminal negligence causing death.
This case has carried a lot of weight for this community from the beginning. Are you following the verdict Friday?
St. Albert Voted to Keep Its Ambulances, Unlike Its Neighbours
St. Albert city council voted unanimously on Tuesday to maintain its integrated fire and ambulance service, even though it means residents will pay more.
The province reduced its contribution to the Ground Ambulance Service Agreement, giving every municipality a choice: absorb the extra cost or transition out of providing ambulance services. St. Albert chose to stay and will re-negotiate its contract with Emergency Health Services.
The added cost works out to roughly a 1.2% tax increase for residents.
Spruce Grove and Leduc both voted to transition out when their provincial contracts expire September 30. Strathcona County voted to stay in a 5 to 4 split earlier this month. St. Albert is now the unanimous yes among surrounding communities.
If your city council was making this call, what would you choose: your ambulance or your tax bill?

Alberta Families Have Been Paying for the Iran War Since February. Now There Is a Number.
Statistics Canada released the official April 2026 inflation figures on Tuesday, and the number that explains your last three months at the pump is right there in black and white.
Canada's headline inflation rate rose to 2.8% in April, up from 2.4% in March, the highest reading in two years. Gas prices are driving the jump: gasoline is up 28.6% year-over-year, a direct result of the Strait of Hormuz being largely blocked since February when the US and Israel launched military operations against Iran.
Transportation inflation surged to 7.6%. Food inflation eased to 3.5% and core inflation fell to around 2%, both below expectations and both better news than the headline number suggests.
Edmonton families are feeling the difference more at the gas station than anywhere else. The federal decision to suspend the fuel excise tax mid-month helped moderate the April figure slightly, but the pump is still the story.
How much more are you spending at the pump compared to this time last year? Hit reply and tell me.
⚽ Canada Is Spending $1.1 Billion to Host the World Cup. Here Is What That Gets You.
A Bloomberg analysis published Wednesday puts a price on what it costs to bring the world's biggest sporting event to your doorstep, and the number is not small.
Canada's three levels of government will spend just under $1.1 billion Canadian to host 13 World Cup games in Toronto and Vancouver. That works out to roughly $82 million per game.
The opening ceremony in Canada happens June 12 at BMO Field in Toronto, with performances from Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Michael Bublé, Jessie Reyez and others. Canada plays its first game June 12 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto.
The tournament is expected to attract over one million visitors and generate $2 billion in economic activity across Canada. Edmonton readers already know what that World Cup energy feels like after Commonwealth Stadium packed in 44,212 fans for the 2021 World Cup qualifier.
The games are three weeks away. Are you watching? Will you be at the Canada vs Uzbekistan friendly at Commonwealth on June 1?

Four Republicans Just Broke Ranks on the Iran War, and That Is a Big Deal
The US Senate voted 50 to 47 on Tuesday to advance a war powers resolution that would direct President Trump to end the Iran war, and it only got there because four Republicans crossed party lines.
Senators Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Bill Cassidy joined Democrats to discharge the resolution from committee. Senator Tim Kaine introduced it. The resolution directs the president to remove US forces from hostilities with Iran unless Congress formally authorizes the war.
Bill Cassidy, who just lost his Louisiana primary over the weekend, voted in favour for the first time. The resolution still needs to pass the Republican-controlled House and would almost certainly face a presidential veto, but the 50 to 47 vote is the first major congressional challenge to Trump's military authority over this conflict.
For Alberta, the stakes are direct. Every day the Strait of Hormuz stays closed, oil prices stay elevated and provincial royalty revenue stays tied to a war Congress never authorized in the first place.
Does it surprise you that Republicans broke ranks? What do you think happens next?

$992 Billion in Art Could Change Hands. Why Are These 71,105 Investors Paying Close Attention?
Deloitte ran the numbers. They project UHNW art and collectibles wealth -- already at $2.5 trillion -- to hit $3.47 trillion by 2030.
The institutional world has been quietly preparing for this. Back in 2011, 25% of wealth managers surveyed offered art-related services. In 2024, 51%. Family offices now average a 13.4% allocation to art and collectibles.
And it’s not just because they love art. It’s because they like the math.
These positions were built over decades through private dealer relationships most investors never had. The access just wasn't there.
Masterworks is changing that by allowing individuals to invest in shares of blue-chip artwork by artists like Basquiat, Warhol, and Picasso. Their track record to-date:
71,000+ investors
$1.3B deployed across 525+ artworks
29 closed sales
