An Alberta Mom Is Stuck in Bed. The Province Said No.
Tamara Polo had a full and busy life until a car hit her in a parking lot in 2023 and changed everything. She now spends 20 hours a day lying flat, and Alberta's health system says she does not qualify for help.
Doctors in the US and Spain diagnosed Polo with cervical instability using upright imaging technology that does not exist in Canada. Alberta's out-of-country funding program requires a Canadian diagnosis to qualify for coverage.
She applied through the Alberta Out of Country Health Services Committee. Both her application and her appeal were denied.
The province says it is now reviewing the program and recognizes patient needs have become more complex since the rules were written nearly two decades ago
In the meantime, Polo is crowdfunding to pay for the surgery that could give her life back to her.
Do you think Alberta's out-of-country health rules are working the way they should? We want to hear your take.
Edmonton Was Fighting Fire on Both Fronts Friday
The city lit a controlled burn in Jan Reimer Park on Friday morning. By afternoon, firefighters were battling fires across the city that nobody planned.
Several grassfires broke out on the same hot, dry and windy day, including a blaze near 137th Avenue and Mark Messier Trail, fires along Winterburn Road in west Edmonton and a large one in the far northeast near Manning Drive
Ten units were sent to the northeast fire and tankers had to haul water in because there are no hydrants in that rural area
District Fire Chief Brian Williams put it plainly: Edmonton is "very, very tinder dry" right now and conditions are not getting easier
The city says the Jan Reimer burn was part of its wildfire prevention program to reduce fuel and help the land recover. The unplanned fires were a tough reminder of why that work matters so much.

Ottawa Just Made It Easier to Build a Pipeline
The federal government announced Friday it wants to move authority over pipeline reviews away from the Impact Assessment Agency and hand it to the Canada Energy Regulator. That is a meaningful shift for Alberta.
The change would allow cabinet to declare a pipeline in the public interest before the full review is finished, speeding up the process significantly
Ottawa also wants to cut major project review timelines from two years down to one year
A 30-day public consultation begins now before any changes become law
This lands on the same day Smith left Ottawa feeling better about the energy MOU. A good Friday for the province.
Does this change how you feel about the chances of a new west coast pipeline? Tell us below.
Carney Called for Bold Moves in Toronto. Obama Was in the Room.
Prime Minister Mark Carney took the stage at the 2026 Global Progress Action Summit in Toronto on Saturday alongside former US President Barack Obama and some of the world's top political voices.
Carney laid out his Build Canada agenda, calling for investment in housing, reduced reliance on the US and an AI strategy that is "safe and sovereign" for Canadians
He told the crowd that over 85 percent of Canadian goods still move tariff-free across the US border and Canada is open to a "Fortress North America" approach in key sectors
He closed with a line worth writing down: "We have to take risks again. Because in a crisis, fortune favors the bold."
US President Donald Trump was not there.
Was that the bold vision Canada needs right now, or just a good speech? Drop your take in the comments.

The US Shot Up Two Iranian Tankers. Trump Still Says the Ceasefire Is Holding.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz took a sharp turn on Friday. US forces fired on and disabled two Iranian oil tankers after an overnight exchange of fire with Iranian naval forces.
The US military struck Iranian military facilities after Iran attacked three Navy ships. The UAE separately reported a missile and drone attack wounding three people.
Secretary of State Rubio said he is waiting for a "serious offer" from Tehran, while Iran called the strikes a violation of the ceasefire and accused Washington of a "reckless military adventure"
An oil slick covering roughly 71 square kilometres has appeared near Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal, and crude oil is holding above $100 a barrel
Trump says the ceasefire is still in effect. Most of the world is watching to see who blinks first.
How long do you think this fragile ceasefire can hold? Tell us your read.

BET YOU DID NOT KNOW 🤔
The woman who invented Mother's Day spent the rest of her life trying to cancel it.
Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia created Mother's Day in 1908 to honour her own late mother. By 1914 it was an official US holiday, and Canada followed. Then the greeting card and candy companies got hold of it, and Jarvis was furious. She called it a Hallmark holiday, said it had become an insult to mothers everywhere, and spent her entire personal fortune fighting to have it abolished. She was arrested at an anti-commercialization protest in 1948 and died later that year, broke and in a sanitarium.
The irony? The candy and flower industries quietly helped pay her hospital bills.
Happy Mother's Day, Anna. We see you.
