Good Tuesday morning, Edmonton!
The sun is out and we have a big one today. A trial that this city has been waiting for since April 2024 got underway yesterday, council sits on a massive decision about our bus system, and the United States just showed up to China with the most expensive entourage in diplomatic history. Let's get into it.
Oh don’t skip the ‘YOUR TURN’ section, we have a small favour to ask you.🙏

The Trial Edmonton Has Been Waiting For
Crystal Jean McDonald appeared in Edmonton court Monday on a charge of criminal negligence causing death. Her two large-breed dogs, Chaos and Cairo, mauled 11-year-old Kache Grist to death in the Summerside neighbourhood in April 2024.
Court heard the dogs had a documented aggression history for nine months before the fatal attack
They previously killed a dog, killed a tenant's cat, bit a tenant badly enough for stitches, and injured McDonald herself
A dozen Crown witnesses are expected over a trial scheduled through next Tuesday
🔪 Murder Charge Laid in Sherwood Park Stabbing
A man is now charged with second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing at an apartment complex on Fir Street in Sherwood Park.
The stabbing occurred May 8 at the Fir Street building
Strathcona County RCMP attended the scene and later made an arrest
The victim, a man, died from his injuries
🚌 Edmonton's Buses Are in Trouble, Council Has a Big Call to Make
The urban planning committee hears a report Tuesday on Edmonton's aging bus fleet, with three very different options on the table.
Option 1: $42.4 million - partial refurbishment only, results in up to 331,000 fewer service hours per year
Option 2: $186.9 million - replace 100 buses over four years, the minimum to avoid service cuts
Option 3: $386.9 million - replace 300 buses, eliminates the need for most refurbishment work
More than half the conventional fleet will be over 20 years old within four years, two years past ideal retirement

The Hantavirus Canadians Are Home, and Being Watched for 42 Days
The four British Columbia residents from the MV Hondius cruise ship are now back in Canada and under close monitoring.
BC's top doctor confirmed the watch window is 42 days from May 6, running to mid-June, longer than the 21 days initially reported
Four other Canadians including an Albertan who may have been exposed during the flight home are also isolating
Health authorities say this remains a critical period

Trump Is Taking 15 Major CEOs to China This Week
President Trump announced Monday he is bringing a high-profile delegation of US business leaders to Beijing for talks with President Xi Jinping.
The group includes Elon Musk, Apple's Tim Cook, BlackRock's Larry Fink, Boeing's Kelly Ortberg, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon and executives from Mastercard, Visa, Qualcomm and Citigroup
China is expected to announce Boeing aircraft purchases as part of the talks
For Canada watching from the sidelines: a US-China trade thaw reshapes the same supply chains Ottawa depends on, just as Canada is still navigating its own relationship with Washington
🛢️ Oil Climbs Again as Iran Ceasefire Remains Broken
Brent crude settled at $104.21 a barrel Monday after the US and Iran failed to reach agreement on peace terms.
Trump rejected Iran's formal ceasefire response and threatened to "obliterate" Iranian infrastructure if talks collapse completely
A drone struck a ship off Qatar and the UAE shot down two drones it blamed on Iran
For Alberta: every dollar on the Brent price matters, and the energy world is watching this week closely
