Happy long weekend Friday, Edmonton.

What a day to land in your inbox. The Oilers made a major call overnight, Ottawa and Alberta are finally shaking hands on a deal years in the making, and in a quiet Edmonton courtroom yesterday, a father said words no parent should ever have to say out loud. There is a lot here today. Let us get into it.💛

Knoblauch Is Out, The Oilers Are Starting Over

The Edmonton Oilers fired head coach Kris Knoblauch on Thursday, one week after a first-round exit ended what turned out to be his final season behind the bench.

  • Knoblauch and assistant coach Mark Stuart were both let go, with the team confirming only that "changes are needed"

  • He led Edmonton to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances but could not survive a 2026 first-round loss to the Ducks

  • No replacement has been named and a formal coaching search is now underway

Who do you want behind the bench next season? Drop your pick in the comments.

Edmonton Airport Just Broke Ground on a $36M Cargo Hub

The shovel is in the ground at Edmonton International Airport, where construction started Wednesday on a major new international cargo hub.

  • The project is backed by federal and provincial funding and is designed to expand Canada's supply chain while positioning Edmonton as a bigger player in global trade

  • The hub is expected to create about 400 jobs in the region and handle significantly higher freight volumes

  • Completion is targeted for fall 2027

Is this the kind of long-term infrastructure investment our region needs more of?

📚 Alberta Is Hiring 1,400 New Teachers This Fall

The province committed $200 million Wednesday to bring 1,400 new teachers into kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms before September, with Edmonton school boards among the biggest winners.

  • Edmonton Public Schools receives $39.9 million to hire 296 new teachers

  • Edmonton Catholic Schools receives $18.9 million for 140 new teachers

  • Average class sizes are expected to drop from 25 students to 22 across the province

Is your school seeing overcrowded classrooms right now? Tell us what you are dealing with.

"Kache Is Dead" A Father Testifies at the Dog Attack Trial

Wesley Grist took the stand Thursday at Crystal MacDonald's criminal negligence trial, and what he described left the courtroom in silence.

  • Grist found his 11-year-old son Kache's bloodied body on the kitchen floor of the Summerside home with the two Cane Corsos still surrounding him after the April 2024 attack

  • Doorbell footage played in court showed him covered in his son's blood, repeating "Kache is dead, Kache is dead" into his phone while emergency services rushed inside

  • The Crown rested its case Thursday. The trial continues today with the defence expected to respond

"We were best friends," Grist said about his son. There is nothing more to add.

Carney and Smith Sign the Alberta Pipeline Deal Today

It is finally happening. Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Calgary this morning to sign an implementation agreement with Premier Danielle Smith that officially puts a new West Coast bitumen pipeline back on the table.

  • The deal locks in Alberta's industrial carbon pricing rising to $130 per tonne by 2040, the final sticking point in months of MOU negotiations

  • The agreement advances the Pathways carbon capture and storage project as the environmental trade-off for expanded oil production

  • Opposition Leader Poilievre has already raised questions about whether the pipeline will actually get built under the new terms

Note: substitute a fresh post-signing Global News or CTV link at publish time once the official announcement is confirmed.

Albertans have been waiting a long time for this. Do you believe the pipeline gets built this time?

Trump and Xi in Beijing: 200 Boeing Jets, a Stability Pact and a Warning on Taiwan

Day one of the Trump-Xi summit in Beijing produced broad agreements and a headline number on Boeing aircraft, but no major trade breakthrough as both sides navigated trade tensions, the Iran situation and Taiwan.

  • China agreed to buy 200 Boeing jets, far fewer than the 500 analysts had expected and Boeing shares fell on the news

  • Trump and Xi jointly pledged to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and demilitarised, a direct signal on Iran that matters for Alberta's energy market while oil sits above $105

  • Xi warned that mishandling Taiwan would put the US-China relationship in "great jeopardy." Day two of talks is happening today

The Hormuz commitment is one to watch. Where it goes from here shapes oil prices and Alberta's bottom line.

Iran Ceasefire Day 36: Still Holding, But the Threats Are Getting Louder

The ceasefire marks its 36th day today without a major military incident, but peace talks are going nowhere and the pressure is building.

  • Iran's parliament has threatened to push uranium enrichment to 90% weapons grade if the US resumes military strikes

  • Brent crude eased slightly to $105.87 per barrel but remains far above pre-war levels, keeping Alberta's energy sector in a strong position

  • No mediator agreement is in sight and formal negotiations remain at a standstill

Note: confirm a fresh CNBC or Global News link at publish time for the most current ceasefire status.

The silence is the loudest part right now. How long do you think this ceasefire actually holds?

STORY CORNER 📖

The Neighbour Who Just Sat

A few years ago, a retired schoolteacher in east Edmonton started something small.

Every long weekend morning she carried a cup of tea to her front step and just sat. No phone. No errands. Just the street and whoever happened to walk by.

A neighbour slowed down the first time and said hello. The next year two neighbours sat with her. By the third year her driveway had a small crowd and someone had brought a lawn chair from their garage.

She said she started doing it because she realised she had spent 30 years rushing past the people right next to her.

You do not need a long weekend to try this. But a long weekend is a very good excuse to start.

Happy Victoria Day, Edmonton. Enjoy the pause.
