Happy post-Mother's Day, Edmonton.

Whether you spent yesterday being celebrated or doing the celebrating, I hope it was a good one, even if it did not involve being rescued off a stuck riverboat on the North Saskatchewan. Big stories to catch you up on this Monday morning, so let's get right into it.💛

When Your Mother's Day Cruise Becomes a Rescue Operation

Two hundred people did not plan to spend their Sunday evening being helped off a boat, but that is exactly what happened.

  • The Edmonton Riverboat stopped moving during a Mother's Day dinner cruise at around 4:09 p.m. near Scona Road and 99B Street

  • Edmonton Fire Rescue arrived by 4:22 p.m. with two rescue boats and two land sector crews

  • All passengers were safely off by Sunday evening with no injuries reported, cause still not confirmed

A dinner cruise, a river, and a rescue crew. Only in Edmonton. Did anyone at your table see this one coming?

Smith Just Changed One Word, and It Means a Lot

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith went on record Sunday saying the pipeline deal with Ottawa is now a matter of "when, not if."

  • Smith met with PM Carney Friday and left feeling far more confident than when she walked in

  • She says finalizing an energy agreement could quiet the separatist movement and open the door to Ottawa giving Alberta more say in other issues

  • She is framing it as "co-operative federalism", a template she wants to build on

One word shift from "if" to "when." That is a big deal in Alberta politics. Do you believe her?

🏈 Football Is Back, and the Elks Are Coming in Hot

The Edmonton Elks officially opened their 2026 CFL training camp Monday at Commonwealth Stadium with plenty of energy and optimism.

  • Rookie camp wrapped up May 7 to 9, the full squad came together Monday morning

  • This is the first real look ahead for Edmonton sports fans since the Oilers' tough exit in late April

  • The Elks are leaning into a fresh start with new pieces and a hungry roster

After a tough playoff exit, Edmonton has a new team to cheer for. Are you already in on the Elks this season?

Trump Says Iran's Peace Response Is "Totally Unacceptable", Oil Climbs Again

Iran sent its formal reply to the latest US ceasefire proposal on Sunday, and Trump shot it down within hours on social media.

  • Iran wants negotiations to cover ending the war across all fronts including Lebanon, and keeping its nuclear program on the table separately

  • Trump called the response "TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!" and accused Iran of playing games for almost 50 years

  • A drone struck a ship off Qatar and the UAE shot down two more drones it blamed on Iran - Brent crude jumped back to $104.50 a barrel

The ceasefire is holding by a thread. Watch the oil price closely this week, Alberta's bottom line moves with it.
