Good morning, Edmonton and surrounding areas! Happy Tuesday! 🌫️

If your sky looks a little hazy this morning, you are not imagining it. Wildfire smoke rolled in from the Northwest Territories overnight, and Environment Canada has an air quality warning out for today, so we will get into what that means for you below.

Here is hoping you can still find a little sunshine somewhere in your Tuesday.

Air Quality Warning Blankets Edmonton as Wildfire Smoke Rolls In

How bad is the air quality in Edmonton today?

Environment Canada issued an air quality warning Monday for all of Alberta north of Red Deer, as smoke from 202 active wildfires in the Northwest Territories drifted south and the haze is expected to stick around through Tuesday.

  • Edmonton's Air Quality Health Index hit the very high risk category, 10 plus, by Monday afternoon.

  • Anyone 65 and older, pregnant, very young or managing a chronic condition is asked to limit time outdoors today.

Keep the windows closed and the water close by, this one is worth taking seriously.

Yellowhead Trail Fully Reopens After a Rough Week of Flooding

Is Yellowhead Trail open again after the flooding?

Yellowhead Trail is back open in both directions as of Monday morning, after weekend flooding piled onto storm damage from the week before forced repeated closures between 66th Street and 184th Street.

  • Crews completed emergency repairs on the westbound stretch that took the brunt of the damage.

  • This marks the second time in a week the corridor flooded, so a slower morning commute would not be a shock if more rain rolls through.

One less detour to plan around this morning.

Alberta Summer Games Wrap in Strathcona County, St. Albert Athlete Medals

How did local athletes do at the Alberta Summer Games?

The 2026 Alberta Summer Games closed out the weekend in Strathcona County after four days of competition among athletes aged 11 to 16 from across the province.

  • St. Albert's Hattie Mitchell brought home silver in the 15U Female Javelin Throw for Zone 1.

  • More than a dozen sports ran through Strathcona County venues over the four days.

Congratulations to every athlete who competed.

Search Continues for Missing Calgary Boy, Amber Alert Rules Questioned

Has Parker been found yet?

Not yet. The search for 11 year old Parker, who is nonverbal and neurodivergent, entered its fifth day Monday, with more than 300 police officers and 120 search and rescue volunteers combing the city and new CCTV footage released to the public.

  • Alberta granted a special exemption to issue an Amber Alert two days after Parker went missing, reigniting debate over how strict the criteria should be.

  • Anyone in the Thorncliffe area with home security footage from Thursday July 16 is asked to submit it to Calgary police, even if it does not show Parker.

Keep an eye out and keep him in your thoughts.

Trump Threatens More Tariffs Over Wildfire Smoke After Sitting With Carney

Why is Trump threatening new tariffs on Canada now?

Speaking after Sunday's World Cup final, where he sat beside Prime Minister Carney, Trump renewed his threat to tariff Canada or demand damages over wildfire smoke drifting into the US, a storyline that ties directly back to the smoke now sitting over Edmonton too.

  • Smoke from Canadian wildfires has triggered air quality warnings across Ontario and several US states.

  • Carney has brushed off the criticism, pointing instead to Canada's clean energy investments.

A storyline worth watching as fire season stretches on.

Andy Burnham Sworn In as Britain's Seventh Prime Minister in a Decade

Who is the UK's new prime minister?

Andy Burnham was sworn in as UK prime minister Monday, taking over from Keir Starmer in a Buckingham Palace handover, and pledging to end the political instability that has defined the last ten years of British leadership.

  • Burnham secured the Labour leadership unopposed after nominations from 379 of the party's 403 MPs.

  • He is seen as a more relaxed, natural communicator compared to the more buttoned up Starmer.

A big shakeup for one of Canada's closest allies.

Ukraine Launches One of Its Largest Drone Raids Yet on Moscow

What happened in the latest Ukraine Russia escalation?

More than 400 Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow region overnight Sunday into Monday, hitting an oil depot and logistics facilities and wounding at least 10 people, with Russian officials reporting even higher injury counts in nearby towns.

  • Large fires broke out at an oil depot in Podolsk, just south of the Kremlin.

  • Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed strikes on Russian shadow fleet tankers as well.

One of the largest raids of the conflict so far.
